    Besides Toyota?

"1st Generation Prius: The first generation Prius was sold between 1997 and 2001. These were really only sold in Japan, with some selling in the United States late into this time period. Reports show the price of those first Prius' were around $17,000 US dollars, although the cost to build them may have been double. Toyota took a loss their to start their line of green vehicles. In the long run, it looked like this was smart as the Prius is now the most fuel efficient car in the United States, and one of the top selling Toyota cars out there."

Wait. The South Koreans own a French auto company and have put $25 billion of publicly-funded debt behind it and pushed a car that will never pay back its development costs (unlike the Toyota Prius, which sold immediately) because it makes absolutely no sense from a consumer point of view?

This thread *is* full of news.

In the meantime, Japan continues to invest billions in EV/HEV battery research. Toyota announces a new solid-electrolyte battery for its new eQ.

"They have also developed a new solid electrolyte battery which has an output density that is five times greater than the company's current batteries."

The research for which was funded by NEDO www.nedo.go.jp/english/introducing_index.html Japan's government consortium for R and D.

    realli.org/cyclopediadetail.php?id=6&page=1

"According to the report of Tech-On! on Oct. 18, 2010, the Li/S battery had become one of research directions of Japanese new energy vehicle power batteries; since 2009, the Japanese NEDO will invest 30 billion yen (about 2.4 billion) in it every year in hope of making its energy density reach to 500Wh/kg by 2020. And the moves of America are even quicker, the U.S. DOE has invested $5 million to support the research of Li/S battery recently and it planned to make its energy density up to 500Wh/kg in 2013."

Toyota Prius. Billions of dollars of investment by TOYOTA. Detailed histories of the car, starting with Toyota's G21 project in 1993, out there for anyone to catch up on.

Azrael: The Japanese government gave us the Prius.
Me: Really? Why do you seem to know what no one else knows or has reported?
Azrael: Here are 50 obscure links to small grants given by the Japanese government to universities, that have nothing to do with the Prius, most well after the Prius was a profitable car for Toyota.
Me: That has nothing to do with what you said.
Azrael: In Japan the Invisible Hand is attached to an arm of government, and holds a gigantic checkbook.

Still waiting for anything that make the Prius the product of the Japanese government, the way the failed Chevy Volt -- in fact, the whole failed Chevy mess -- is the product of the U.S. government.

Good for him. Don't we all wish we had money to blow in feel-good pet projects (i.e. being a billionaire).

Best of luck to Mr. Bolloré on breaking even in 7 years.
