The Leviticus thing is often brought up by pro-gay-marriage groups to silence opposition to their stance. It is true that evangelicals do not take the entire Old Testament/Hebrew law literally, because they believe the law was fulfilled in Jesus, who provides forgiveness for sin.

However, it is more likely to see evangelicals take the New Testament much more literally and with much more scrutiny, especially where it announces agreement with Old Testament law. Paul basically states that it's OK to not follow the Jewish dietary laws (and that singleness -- essentially, chastity -- is preferable to being married/sexually active). Romans 1:24-32 is more relevant than Leviticus when trying to understand an evangelical position on homosexuality.

I've been a part of evangelical churches my entire life, and actively involved in both church and parachurch movements. While sex and marriage are discussed often -- teaching the Biblical ideal of no sex outside of marriage, and also in strengthening marriages in an attempt to avoid divorce (both of which the Bible mentions extensively), we aren't really obsessed with same-sex couples, and on the rare occasions when the "g" word is mentioned, it's usually in the context of "love the person, but do not feel compulsion to endorse the behavior." We don't really endorse divorce or sex outside of hetero marriage, either, but are not accused of "hating" divorced people.

The only churches I've been around/involved with who seem to bring up gay issues are liberal congregations who are openly accepting of them. Otherwise, it doesn't come up.

Correct, the New Testament doesn't say anything about hating ANYONE.

But it does say a lot about hating sin, and does pretty explicitly define it.

Same-sex sexual relationships are pretty clearly mentioned here.

    http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans+1&version=NIV

Here are key points: "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done."

It goes on a bit more, and lists several specific sins, but the point is made.

And the political left's laser-beam focus on evangelical Christians while giving Muslims a free pass even though their beliefs on the same issue are significantly more harsh is intellectual dishonesty at best and hypocrisy at worst.

Conservative commentator Mark Steyn concludes that it's politically convenient to attack evangelicals and ignore similar Muslim beliefs because, well, Muslims vote the right way and evangelicals don't, so it's politically convenient to coddle one and ignore the other, even if it, in the long run, will be harmful: http://www.ocregister.com/opinion/mayor-365812-menino-gay.html

Well, evidently he knows a helluva lot about the inclination of the U.S. political left to point out a speck in evangelical Christianity's eye while ignoring a log in others' eyes.

There has never been an issue with "the other" hijacking one of our two major political parties and/or having the political leverage to impose their beliefs upon us. The "speck" is far more likely to impact my life than the "log" in this case--that's why we pay more attention to it.

By the way, can we take your statement to mean you're okay with imprisonment or the death penalty for gays as long as it happens in a country that practices Sharia law?

    Of course not.

That log sure impacted a lot of lives on 9-11. And the main problem some of you have with Christians is that they simply annoy you.
