From another thread on the subject, this is what is responsible:

Atlanta resident Gary Juster, a former wrestling promoter, said the old circuits needed wrestlers, men who added a shtick to their act, but were athletes first and foremost.
Then, about 25 years ago, the sport changed. "The look of a typical wrestler changed," Juster said. "It changed from wrestler to bodybuilder, that chiseled look. There wasn't as much passion for the craft."
As "The Look" became more important, steroids became more popular. "Guys did whatever they had to do to get ahead," Juster said.

Well, then you're only using a tenth of it. You should be proud.

When I was an intern in a PR department for an NFL team back in college I remember being at training camp and wrestling came on the tube. It started with me and the PR director, and soon the almost entire coaching staff of the team was in the room watching Doink the Clown (with Dink) battle the Macho Man. Halfway through the match, Macho Man foiled Dink with a Mini-Macho Man who popped out from under the ring. The room erupted.

Some of the men in that room were wearing Super Bowl rings, and a few went on to earn a few more Super Bowl rings. I think their IQ was/is above 70.

Granted, wrestling has bottomed out over the past few years, but it was once great. Sort of like Republicans.

  4. I for one am shocked that a poster who has shown the respect, dignity and even-handed approach like Tony would make such a snap judgment.

And isn't Rush Limbaugh a big wrestling fan? I remember one time long long ago he was ranting about the NWA's racist name and how come they got to use the n-word and all, and at the end he said something like "besides, I thought the NWA was the National Wrestling Alliance."

    Not quite, guys.

You're blaming Mushnick -- who, admittedly, can be a pedantic nudge -- for Murdoch's wingnut politics. It's one thing not to like the NY Post, but it's another not to acknowledge the facts presented to you just because the messenger happens to toil for a right-wing paper.

Where is the typical Postie, pro-Bush, pro-big business angle in this piece? Mushnick is teeing off on a business entity and the Gilded Age, robber-baron way it operates in regards to its labor.

And Rok? Your analogy broke down the moment you hit 'post'. Why would Ed O'Neil the actor be ineligible from doing a responsible parenting PSA because of a character he played on a TV show? Now, if he was known for beating his kids, that's a different matter.

Until I hear about that, I'll consider your analogy misplaced and ill-conceived.

Actually, the WWE's testing process has a loophole the size of the USSR — as long as the steroids are prescribed by a doctor, it's okay to take them.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but Benoit's doctor has been arrested for dispensing mass quantities of pain killer. Hasn't been linked to Benoit yet, but still...wow.

You know that story about the kid having Fragile X syndrome and it causing strife between Benoit and his wife? It might not be true...

ATLANTA (AP) — A prosecutor investigating pro wrestler Chris Benoit, who killed his wife and son and committed suicide, is questioning World Wrestling Entertainment’s early assertion that the boy had a form of mental retardation called Fragile X syndrome.
A spokesperson for WWE — which shortly after the killings deflected speculation about steroids by saying the Benoits had argued over whether the wrestler should stay home more to take care of the 7-year-old son — also backed away Tuesday from its statements about the boy’s diagnosis.
Fayette County prosecutor Scott Ballard said in a news release Tuesday that some of the boy’s medical records have been reviewed and “they do not mention any pre-existing mental or physical impairment.”

But if they said he tested "negative", at the very least they have to acknowledge publicly that the definition of negative is so convoluted that it makes Clinton's sex definition downright cut-and-dried. And if I'm remembering right, they came out and said he was TOTALLY negative on the last drug test. That's something they're going to have to explain sooner rather than later.

Someone on this thread said that Benoit couldn't have killed Daniel with the crossface because Chris used it across other wrestlers' faces. But what if he locked it in across his son's throat? That could explain the marks across Daniel's throat.

The marks on Daniel's throat do not add up to a crossface.

A crossface is a totally different hold than the large array of actual choke holds. Hence, if he choked the kid, it couldn;t have been a crossface.

My thinking is it sounds like he probably held the kid in his arms and put him out with a side choke, which any 220-pound man could do to a 7-year-old. A side choke is more like a side headlock, only the forearm is held across the jugular veins instead of the ear area.
