    I Digress, I see that Double J has touched a nerve with you, but I really think you are missing his point and overdoing it on the response a bit. Maybe he could have worded it a little differently, but I don't see what is worth getting so worked up about.

    He's not talking about motivations behind her behavior. He is saying that she has to make the decision to get out of the situation. Nobody can make that decision for her, or for any battered woman. It is a reasonable point of view.

    Thanks, outofplace - that's exactly what I'm trying to say. :)

    I think he, and most of the people on this thread, are showing the typical ignorance that exists about abuse and battered women. It's not suprising, just sad coming from someone who should be better informed than the average person based simply on his career.

    Short of kidnapping, how would Rihanna get out of the relationship if she doesn't want to leave?

    ::)

    Spare me. Both the sniping and the sanctimonious attitude.

    How exactly is it ignorant to suggest that she has to decide to get out before anybody can help her? As opposed to saying that her father or somebody else should jump in and rescue her?

    based on his career as a journalist he should be more informed about battered women? really?

    When it comes to battered women, drug addicts, alcoholics....many professionals say the first step to recovery is the choice to end that behavior, or relationship. I don't see anything wrong with that point of view.

    I don't want to speak for OOP, but I don't think that's what he meant. The entire world can sit her down and tell her she should leave him, it's what's best for her.....but she ultimately has to make that choice.

    I think most of us have been in a relationship where the other person treated us poorly.

    It may not have risen to the level of physical abuse... but once you're out of it, you think, "Why the hell did I let myself be treated that way?"

    But when you're in it, you don't see that.

    I have no doubt that when that pissant is in jail and when Cover Girl cancels her contract, Rihanna will snap out of it and go WTF was I thinking?

    But right now she feels terrible and guilty that somebody she cares about is in serious trouble.

    I'm not altogether sure there is a straight line between substance abuse and being a battered woman. There is no 12-step program to stop being beaten.
