Parent uses F on report card to push “do your homework” agenda, suggests F is a consequence of not doing homework.

Yep, these early-season winter storms out of the Southwest used to be an anomaly. Now we're getting them almost every year.

The big California storm headed this way and we're looking at snow in the mountains, but dangerous (hurricane-strength) winds that will drive up wildfire dangers.

    In mid-December.

Our departmental alumni ass and the general alumni population have been passing the hat. A friend who has a heart of gold and zero filter, has told people to send money and stay the fuck home. I get what D. is saying. When the floods happened in the early oughts, I worked as a volunteer coordinator at one of the emergency centers. (Blame Hands On. A religious group commandeered it one weekend and after that they wanted, oh, I don't know, sane people to run it. A week later when one of their cult members introduced herself as a Baptist Minister and asked me about the culty folk, I told her Jason Lee talked to me through the television and she left me alone. But I digress...) My point is that people showed up at the center with carloads of old clothes. The last thing people trying to clear the silt out of their homes needed were old prom dresses, stuff way too ragged to wear, and outdated evening wear.

When someone cornered the person running a food drive at one of the local groceterias about what people needed, the lady told her the best contribution she could give was money, second best was a bag of groceries for the food drive, especially bottled water. I backed her up and said those were the things that could be easily prepped and processed.

    That's when the whining started.

"But Ah got a lotta clows! Ah wanna give 'em mah clows!"

I got out my little magic notebook and wrote down three agencies that desperately needed clothing. She glowered, pouted, and said, "Ah wanna give 'em to sumbuddy from the fluuuuud!" And walked away.

Seriously. Listen to the people who have been trained to work in disaster relief.

And BTW, you would be amazed at what people asked for when they approached the Red Cross to "help" in New Orleans. I worked as a travel coordinator and untitled person to help people with culture shock after Katrina. And God bless every Canadian who dropped holiday plans to spend months helping in Mississippi and Louisiana.

    Good!

TL:dr Don't be an asshole. I know you won't, but I've met a lot of them and wanted to vent.

Himalayan glaciers melting at an ‘exceptional' rate because of global warming, study finds

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...-fast-pace-because-global-warming/8941101002/

"The glaciers are a critical source of water for about 250 million people in the mountains and an additional 1.65 billion who live in the river valleys below, according to a report in 2019. These rivers include the Ganges, Indus and Brahmaputra."

I'm planning on riding my bike from Alexandria into D.C. and back on Christmas day in shorts and a t-shirt, so that's where we are right now.
