They're fighting to keep the area from being washed away.

My wife is at the beach this week and has talked about incredibly high tides. She said ever at low tide, there's not much room between the surf and dunes. Rodanthe is known for houses right on the surf line like that. I don't know how old they are, but they'd never get building approval today. There are a few houses on Topsail Island at the very north end where the New River Inlet is, and the feds have talked about condemning them all and buying the people out because it would be cheaper than trying to maintain the area.

I don't ever remember a spring with winds like we've had in Virginia this year. Consistently 15-20 mph, if not more, with a lot of gusts. A good day may be 7-9. It's really cut down on my road biking because riding back into a wall of wind just isn't fun at all. I'm hoping it settles at some point as we move into summer, but it's been weird here this year.

All of this seems to be happening at a pace much faster than the climate scientists predicted. Faster and more severe.

Winds have been brutal here for nearly two months. Constant red flag warnings. Super-low humidity. Bracing for another horrible wildfire season, which, actually, is not a season anymore but more year-round.

That's exactly what my wife is experiencing. She said it's pointless to even try to ride, so she's just put it on a trainer on the front deck.

“Wherever I look, I see obvious signs of climate warming, of human-induced climate change,” said Kim Holmen, a special adviser and former international director of the Norwegian Polar Institute who has worked on Svalbard for more than 30 years. “You name it, we’ve got it.”
