First trip to jail is just another step to her canonization.

First she beats out Trump for TIME Person of the Year. Now she's gonna beat him to jail.

Show me my contempt for EV buyers.

I disagree. Strongly. I think most people are responsible on a lot of fronts, and are trying to be more thoughtful about the environment and their carbon footprint. For years and years, they've been. And, according to the scientific evidence and doomy rhetoric, it hasn't made a dent in the problem. Now, if that's true, and the consequences resulting from climate change are as bad and all-encompassing as have been predicted - if billions of lives are at stake - than this 10% less wastefulness is a drop in the bucket. It won't matter. It won't save anyone.

So if it's really that bad - if, to borrow a medical example, we have to start chemo tomorrow - then we already know we have to cut consumption drastically and accept all the implications that go with it. We become a far less globalist society. Forget waste - we ration. We end crypto now. We limit smart phone ownership not only as a means of protecting kids from addiction, but as a climate change solution. I know families that have gone to Disney World 9 years in a row - they don't get to do that anymore. Pro sports teams reorganize according to geography; there is not a AFC and NFC West, but one group of West teams that play 14 games each other. So on and so on. Let's really live into it.

But that's not going to happen. You know that and I know that. It'll be piecemeal solutions - some EVs over here, some solar panels over there - all the way down.

Now, if we were to ask Greta Thunberg why widespread change won't happen, she, being a true believer who once went on a personal strike, would say it's related to the wicked greed of world leaders. She would turn it into a power debate and condescend to it.

    What say you?

    You:

I want a sustainable planet too. I have no dog in the fight against renewables; I have relatives *in* the renewable energy business. I’m saying most of this won’t work; how we burn energy - or how we comparatively burn it, fossil v. Renewable - pales in comparison to consumption, but consumption doesn’t make for as neat a story as “ooh, EVs!” so it’s not a story we tell with the same frequency. Abnegation doesn’t seem as fun as a $40,000 purchase that also saves the environment.

    Also you:

That’s not contempt for the people buying them, per se, but the idea that, somehow, that purchase is doing much of anything. Which, it’s not.

I suppose it’s fair to say I have contempt for those who’d argue they’ve “done their part” by buying one. But buying one in and of itself is not worthy of contempt

    Who, me?

You realize that was sarcasm and some Alma trolling, right?
