Why does California give its fires names?

    It's not just California.

Unfortunately, they have to name them during wildfire season because so many spring up at once.

Because giving them stimulus checks made them too lazy to find jobs.

It's the starting capacitor. It sort of looks like a drink can. They go out all the time. My uncle is a heating and air guy. I've been down that road enough and am competent enough to change them. When they blow for me, I just call my uncle, and he just passes the house and hands me one out his truck window.

That's it exactly. Our heating and air guy, an old family friend of my wife's, would just curse the cheap Chinese capacitors when he came to fix it.
The really annoying thing is that they never seem to go out at 8 a.m. on a Tuesday in October when we could maybe get someone over there the same day. It was always on July 4, or at 10 p.m. right before bed when it's already up to 78 degrees in the house and getting stuffy.

I knew there was a punch line somewhere but was waiting for the good one.

My AC unit is always balky at the beginning of the season. When I fire it up in May the compressor is reluctant to kick on and it makes me worry, but after a couple of weeks everything is fine. Any HVAC "experts" with advice?

This is not intended to sound snotty. When's the last time you had a heating and air guy do a preventive maintenance check on it?

It’s a firefighting convention for dealing with major incidents. It makes it easier organizing resources and keeping track of what is going on. Even house fires get names if they need to set up an incident command. It’s just that we learn the names of major wildfires.

All the smoke from California has been blowing into Colorado the past month-plus. IQAir listed Denver with the worst air quality in the world on Saturday. We're only the second-worst this morning.

And, yes, fires have been named for decades. I still remember the ones as a kid, including the massive Panorama fire near San Bernardino in 1980.
