This is the perfect blog item. it's something behind the scenes that will be noteworthy to a number of people. Canzano did exactly what he should have done in writing it. Otherwise, between student workers, security and whoever else witnessed this, I guaruntee you some version of it shows up on Ducks fan site message boards. Better to have your version of it out there rather than let rumors dictate people's perception of the situation.

And for those of you wanting some sort of effort to differentiate between a blog and a newspaper item, it appears from his comments that Canazano's writing on that subject for the Monday paper.

But there'd have been fair warning - and an opportunity for the coach to get his wife reined in. By doing that, if she were to come at you again, I think you can then write a piece - for the paper, not the blog - with a clear conscience. This just seemed like spite.

Which leads me to this: is anyone familiar with the piece he wrote about the son and his DUIs? She was responding to that after all, and we haven't yet discussed how fair or unfair or colorful that piece may have been.

I'm playing Devil's Advocate here, yes ... but do you really think it's Bellotti's responsibility to rein his wife in?

    Esp. when it's his ex-wife.

She is his EX-wife ... there is probably nothing Bellotti can do to reign her in except get her banned from the stadium altogether.

Yeah, I doubt she went up there as Mike Bellotti's wife. She went up there as the kid's mother.

In this situation I think I give him first crack at it. Put it on a man-to-man basis - not as blackmail, certainly, but as a gesture of collegiality. I wouldn't put the onus on the SID to wrangle the coach's (ex-) wife.

Or how about this: Before you post it on your blog, give it 48 hours and see if she calls to apologize.

I really don't know what I'd do. I'm honestly asking.

Vicky Fulmer did the same thing to the late Gary Lundy in 2003 prior to the Georgia game. This wasn't over her husband - or child - but a column Gary wrote about Casey Clausen.

  10. According to the NYT, she reappeared in the media guide this year and the SID said he considers them "back together."

Well, jg, the problem with that is Canzano would be making his publishing of the item conditional on whether HE gets personal satisfaction. And it shouldn't be about him.

But I think that was the problem when he blogged about it. He made it personal.

If the paper had done what F. Ridgeway suggests - a news item written by another staffer at the game - Canzano'd at least have had the fig leaf of impartiality.

Again, I don't know what I'd've done, Shot.
