Writers aren't told the pageviews at Grantland, either. I don't know my pageviews on ESPN.com. I'm glad I don't. That stuff can mess you up.

There's a difference between telling writers and considering them in assignment choices and headline writing.

Not related to Kaepernick, but also in Bay Area and definitely related to tattoos and social ramifications ... yearbook photo disallowed. That's a dude, which is not clear from the photo IMO.

Only if it's indexed against other writers on other platforms.
I think it would be a fascinating psychological study - to make public the page views of competing writers.

I keep seeing people suggest that the racial angle is misplaced, including this apology.

The racism isn't inherent in the tattoo complaint. It's in the incredibly condescending description of Cam Newton and to a lesser extent the weird, dismissive way it singles out Michael Vick and Terrell Pryor.

The Newton stuff was jaw-dropping to me. He's a good boy, knows his place! Alongside the prison references it makes the column embarrassing and indefensible.

Fun after-work discussion over beers: Is it even possible to single out two people?

Well, yeah, I think it's pretty common practice to write headlines that catch the Google Thermonobulator or whatever it is. But I once asked a boss whether he'd ever considered paying writers based on hits, and he looked at me like I was crazy. His greatest fear was that we'd all become trolls. For whatever reason, these columns catch—partly because of all the people going, Look at this stupid column! That's part of what I don't understand about response columns. You're rewarding the original writer with traffic. This is probably Whitley's most successful column in months.

All I know is, you'd have gone a lot further if you didn't have that Abita Turbodog tattoo from your neck to your navel.
