That was hardly a vintage KU roster, compared to some of Williams' and Self's teams. Archie Marshall and Kevin Pritchard were the only other NBA players on that team; Marshall was picked in the third round by the Spurs but never played in the NBA, and Pritchard played only 94 games scattered over six seasons with six different teams before moving upstairs and eventually becoming the Blazers' GM.

Danny and the Miracles wasn't just some cute name for those Jayhawks. It hit on the truth.

I was at the Regional to see Wally Szczerbiak, and though I don't remember many details (I think they beat a 2 seed to advance to the second weekend) my 85-year-old grandmother could see how much better he was than any other player on the court . . . had so much court awareness, every shot seemed to hit nothing but net. Just a joy to watch.

  3. If your'e the type who enjoys a wager from time to time, some of these small conference tourneys are like stealing money because you have a bunch of squares betting now who would pick Siena over Fairfield if the line was 30. Same with Gonzaga-St. Mary's. ("Gonzaga only favored by 5!? That's like free cash!")

Waylon, IMO the only way betting college basketball of any kind makes sense as an investment is if you're fixing games.

I'm not able to watch it, but based on the score and someone I know at the Garden, Calhoun and UCONN have completely quit on the season. They're getting thrashed by the Johnnies right now.

Granted it was more about the story of the entire team, but I really was rooting for Bo Kimble.

Yep, that looked like a team that can't wait to turn in its uniforms and split for the summer. I don't know what the final numbers were, but with 2 minutes to go the Huskies were hitting less than 33 percent from the foul line. That about summarizes the season.

A pretty good column on Gonzaga's loss to St. Mary's from the Seattle Times' Bud Withers:

Bottom line, by losing to St. Mary's, Gonzaga probably pissed away any chance to play its first and second-round games at the Spokane Arena.

    They're looking at a 6 or 7 seed now.

Then good for St. Mary's to send the freakin' Zags packing. No way should anyone ever get to play a 64/32 game at virtually their home arena.

What do they think this is, women's basketball? ;D
