I'd rather give the fans of a 6 seed the chance to pack an arena more than I would a 1 or 2, like Villanova getting the chance last year to play in Philadelphia. A 1 or 2 also has an advantage in that it gets a first-round cupcake; they don't need to be protected beyond that. But if Gonzaga has to tee it up in San Jose next week, that's not the end of the world.

The problem is that the crazy Gonzaga fan base might not travel to SJ. They all went to Vegas thinking they'd get a weekend at home for the first rounds and then head to the Sweet 16 somewhere. Now it would possibly be three trips instead of 2. That's tough.

And yes, Szczerbiak was a first-round upset of now-pinball wizard Todd MacCullough and Washington, then wiped out Utah in round 2 in New Orleans. Saw those games in person. Great stuff.

Amazing Big East game tonight. Seton Hall up by 29 with 13 minutes left, and has to sweat out a Providence three-pointer to tie in the final seconds.
Jay Bilas was just killing all night about the Friar (lack of) D:
"They should call him Keno Avis, since his team has no D."
(after a Greedy Peterson technical for hanging on the rim, as the SH player is shooting): "That was actually a good foul, since it leaves Seton Hall a tougher shot than it's been getting all night."
Loved seeing Greedy deliver 38 points and 16 rebounds worth of fuck you to the Big East media types who didn't even put on the all-conference third team.

That is why I love Bilas, great line.

Bullshit - you are supposed to protect the top seeds because they have earned that right.

If a No. 6 seed doesn't want to play Villanova in Philly - have a better season and become a No. 3 seed.

To me, being able to stay in your region should be one of the perks top seeds get -- somewhat like the women's tournament, otherwise, what is the incentive to be a higher seed, especially now when there is so much parity and after the first day, there ain't much difference at all in who the opponent is going to be.

Actually, the Big East coaches, not the media, vote for all-league teams. So you can save your f-yous for someone else. And it would be hard putting anyone on any all-league team whose team finishes freakin' 15th and hadn't won a game since Jan. 23.

    Nice argument there.

Last four in right now from Lunardi: Memphis, ASU, SDSU, Illinois. That's an awful last four.

Edit: Not sure how long this will last, but right now Yahoo! has every single game today being played at the United Center: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/scoreboard. They're going to have a tough time fitting all those games in.

Dre, ASU is not awful. They just are just fairly shitty. :)

The incentive to be a high seed is that you get to open against a team with an RPI of 180. In other words, it's the closest thing you can get to a bye into Round 2. It's another way of saying you only have to win five games to win the title and the majority of the field has to win six games. That's skewing the competitive advantage enough.

If Notre Dame continues to roll against Seton Hall, it looks like the Big East will be set at 8 bids.
