Can someone explain to me why Jerry Wainwright continues to have a job -- well other than the fact that nobody in their right mind would want that job?

Northwestern ranked for the first time in 40 years. They just missed on my ballot. I put Miami in instead.

Did anyone see this clip from Thursday? Oklahoma's Keith "Tiny" Gallon missed an alley-oop attempt and still shattered the damn backboard.

    Crazy stuff.

Oh yeah, I saw it all right ... it produced a 52-minute delay that made us wait around EVEN LONGER to get the Gonzaga game and box score in the New Year's Day paper.

Also from that game/broadcast, since when is Stephen Bardo an ESPN broadcaster? I thought he was the analyst on "the Illini Radio Network."

Syracuse gone from the unbeaten ranks with a loss at home to Pitt. Hoping to get home to watch that Kansas-Temple game. That'll be a tricky one for the Jayhawks.

Gonzaga wraps up its stout nonconference schedule at 11-3 after an 85-83 OT win vs. Illinois at the United Center in Chicago.

Other than the beat-down the Zags took against Duke, they fared pretty well against tough competition. Their other two losses were a last-minute defeat at Michigan State and a two-point home loss against Wake Forest where one of their top players was ejected on a questionable call.

Wins include the Maui Invitational title (beating Cincinnati in the final and Wisconsin in the semis) and Thursday's "shattered backboard" game against Oklahoma at Spokane Arena.

It's still two months until March, but I think Gonzaga could make another tournament run this year.

Gonzaga will get a six seed, gripe about it, and go no farther than the second round. Book it.

U of L made its first field goal with more than 9 minutes gone. 15-5 Kentucky.

Oh yeah, I forgot ... the NCAA tourney should be reserved for the entire ACC, 12 of 16 Big East teams and whatever other first-round fodder the committee can dig up. ;)

    Just kidding, Cosmo ...

Haha, no. I'm just going on Gonzaga's past history. The Zags will actually probably have enough RPI cachet to get no worse than a four...
