Versatile, I do stand corrected. Miles has a lot of obstacles to crash through in Lincoln. Namely, that the school doesn't really seem to care about basketball success ... well, just cares enough to keep firing coaches. Guess they seem to think that this part of solution is easy.

If it goes deeper than that, Miles will be ground through the woodchipper. If not, Miles has as good a chance as anyone. But time will tell, I suppose ...

I remember Collier being praised as a monster hire for that place. I don't know that Miles should be expected to do any better than Collier or Sadler there. If you're going to whack a coach, you better be damn sure you'll be able to land someone better. I'm not sure they did that, especially since Miles obviously wasn't their first choice.

I'm also not sure why such big things are expected out of Nebraska men's basketball, considering how far down on the totem pole it is on that campus. It can't be higher than No. 4 or 5 on the pecking order, lower if spring football and football recruiting/signing day are considered sports, too.

You have to wonder if this is part of the reason for Shaka Smart to stick around. If they're going to move to a multiple-bid conference, it makes staying with VCU more attractive.

VCU and George Mason would be a great fit in the Atlantic 10 and adding Butler to make it a 16-team league would make sense.

Their best hopes are either a strict system coach (in the mold of Bo Ryan or Tony Bennett) or a big-time recruiter (Josh Pastner or Frank Martin). To get that kind of coach at Nebraska, they'll have to identify a low-major success or an elite assistant.

Miles spent years in Marshall, Minnesota, home to Schwan's and...that's it. Lincoln is NYC in comparison. And I have no idea how he'll do there, but everywhere he's been, the program was way down and he turned it into a success, including making it work at North Dakota State as they transitioned from D2.

Actually, based on that story, John Groce will be the sixth choice if he takes the job.

ESPN reporting Frank Martin leaving Kansas State for South Carolina... Not sure I get that at all unless he either wants to be back on the East Coast or thinks he's gone as long as he can at KSU without getting the NCAA breathing down his neck.

South Carolina can probably pay him a lot more than K-State and Martin will probably be able to sell South Carolina to recruits a lot more easily than K-State.

That's a pretty big fallback hire for Illinois, isn't it? Bruce Weber may have run his course at Illinois and had to be whacked, but can you sell Groce as being a step up?

The race questions brought up in that story make you wonder what's going on in Champaign, too. If getting a black coach is that important, why not Cuonzo Martin? Big Ten background, knows the conference and region, has had decent success.

I can see Martin moving simply because he would be the big dog in his state and not have to compete with KU for attention.
