I wouldn't touch Cal. At any price.

My school was poised to hire him. If that had happened, all my alma mater gear - save for the sheepskin - would have been incinerated.

I need to drive a few hours and kick Kelvin Sampson in the ass before posting on this thread again.

IU deserved to lose with all of its selfish play today.

The potential for winning can be a powerful lure.

I'm not saying I like Cal either -- I think he's a scumbag too, in fact -- but I'd be willing to bet that after how many consecutive uninspiring hires that St. John's is going to look at someone big-time this time around. And Cal fits the bill.

Like I said before, we shall see.

UConn needed Craig Austrie to step up big time w/Dyson and Wiggins out and he really did. Furthermore, the inside trio of Adrien, Thabeet, and Robinson really dominated Indiana. They did exactly what they needed to do, which was not go into their bench.

I hate to tell you guys this but there is only one man responsible for the demise of the St. John's program:

    LOU CARNESECCA.

He retired as coach yet still had total control over everyone in the administration when it came to the basketball program. No one at St. John's will make a move without Looie's blessing.

He is as big a fraud as Tommy Lasorda.

There WAS a Donnell Beverly sighting, though

Best thing about this W for Calhoun is he can go into Monday's game vs. Louisville telling Dyson and Wiggins, 'See? We can win without you. Get your act together.' I'm betting they'll suddenly be OKd to go for that one, though.

Another thing: whatever happened to Rob Garrison? I'm assuming he transferred somewhere.

    Strong commentary.
This is when this board shines the most -
not when we get political knife-fights going, not when we monitor the trolls, not when we see threads locked, not when we masturbate, not when we post-pad -

The board shines most when we get good, solid insider perspective on sports topics.

Don't know if this has been discussed before and don't care.
    It's really a telling factoid:
    (From the NY Times site):

OKLAHOMA 77, BAYLOR 71 The freshman standout Blake Griffin made an unexpected return from a sprained left knee and had 17 points and 15 rebounds as visiting Oklahoma beat No. 25 Baylor for the 27th consecutive time since 1977.

That's sheer domination in that series.

Spnited's right. Carnesecca is the ultimate king-maker at St. John's. Nothing is done without his papal blessing.

I agree with Norm and Spnited that St. John's needs to make a strong move if-and-when they hire a new coach. But with Carnesecca's presence hovering over the meetings, I don't think someone like Calipari would get the job. Remember, St. John's had opportunities to hire him and Bobby Gonzalez before settling on Roberts.

I don't see St. John's paying a basketball coach more than Alabama pays its football coach. That's a crazy number.

I don't know that St. John's ever really made a true effort to land Calipari. And Gonzalez isn't even close to what I would term a 'strong move'.

If Memphis wins it all this season (I have doubts that will happen), I think it's almost a no-brainer that Cal winds up there.
