Gonzaga is starting to get it going from outside, but Wazzu is just calm on offense. They pass up crazy 3-pointers and wait for their shot, which is enjoyable as a fan, even though they play low-scoring games.

Gonzaga just pulled within one at 42-41 with 4:49 left, but missed a shot to take the lead.

Setting up to be a good finish.

This is going to be unreal if Wazzu holds on to win...neither Weaver nor Low has done jack shit so far tonight.

And they have both missed free throws in the last 2 minutes.

Not to nitpick, but did ESPN hire these announcers from some public-access channel? The play-by-play guy just said 'Aaron Weaver.' There's like three minutes left in the game, and Weaver's only one of the focal points in the game tonight. Idiots.

I saw this Rochestie kid play in person a few times when he was at Tulane.

Think he's happy he decided to transfer to Wazzu? Sheesh, that's the move of the century.

Oh, and I think this Austin Daye kid is gonna be pretty good in a couple years.

And down the stretch they come...

Wow, the Cougs ran off like 2 minutes with that possession and it is capped by a ridiculous putback by Weaver. Man, they are showing a lot more confidence down the stretch this season than last year in the tournament.

What's the story on him transferring from Tulane to Wazzu? Seems like a bizarre move.

And Wazzu with a HUGE win. That's a No. 2 seed-type win if they go on and have the type of year they're supposed to in the Pac 10.

As for Rochestie, I'm not quite sure to be honest with you. I'm sure he got sick of the losing and lack of facilities and what-not down at Tulane. I do know that he offered to pay his own way this year so that Bennett could give his scholarship to another kid. Supposedly his family has money, but that's still a pretty cool thing to do.

  11. Since the teevee didn't carry this one here, I'd like to thank Norm and the folks for the excellent PBP posting.

Couple of things on Wazzu: Rochestie transferred, I believe, because of a combination of Katrina and a really nasty knee injury. Did not want to rehab in the middle of the city's rehab, if you will. For me, he was the best offensive player the Cougs had last year when the game was on and the only guy who looked like he was itching to shoot the winner.

The team doesn't score big, but as 'Gola points out, they are placid on offense and seem almost unaffected by deficits. They are like that paperboy in "Better off Dead." You think they're gone and then suddenly they're back on you looking for their $2.

The thing that is really cool about this team is that their big guys do not have to score to influence the game. Weaver eventually scored 12 points in the game, but the big number for him was that he held Matt Bouldin scoreless, which pretty much was the difference. </wazzufanboy>
