Well, there's no doubt that this decision will be a polarizing one.

Either the AD will be lauded for his vision, or he's fired. Not much in between.

Last time I heard of this one, it involved an unknown AD and a school in need of a shot of life. After three years - the last two of which were losing - the coach was called into the AD's office. The AD signed the coach to a 10-year extension, and received death threats shortly thereafter.

The AD was Tom Butters and the coach was Mike Krzyzewski.

This isn't to say that Auburn football will have the story happen again, but it has happened.

Birmingham News' lede on their Web brief:

Auburn has decided to hire Gene Chizik as its new football coach, according to people who have spoken to people who are involved in the search, The Birmingham News has learned.

Talk about a WTF moment ...

    EDIT: To include link.

    EDIT2: He changed the lede.

The comment section in the Birmingham News says it all for Tigers fans: fire the AD!

Oh, I think you can be guaranteed that's going to happen.

I'm assuming this hire means (A) everyone they really wanted turned them down and/or (B) they didn't have the stones to pull the trigger on Turner Gill.

And one more thing ... I'm sure Auburn fans are going to point out that Gene Stallings had a losing record when he came to Alabama in 1990, and then proceeded to go 70-16-1, including a national championship. (His record was reduced to 62-25 by forfeits from the 1993 season).

Stallings was 27-45-1 at Texas A&M, a .377 winning percentage. But in comparison to Chizik's .208 at Iowa State, Stallings was Knute Rockne ...

Anybody think the AD was the one who pulled the trigger on this? This is Auburn, an SEC school, the AD isn't writing the checks for the program.

No, but I think the AD will be held accountable for botching the search so badly, whether he was the one really running the show or not. The trustees aren't going to fire themselves.

Another slap in the face for the BCA. Well done Auburn and well done SEC.

Lose your last 10 games and land one of the top jobs in the SEC. Really, it's unbelievable.

The old boy network. It's unbelievable that it's still working.

Goddamnit, Dan! If you just said BOBBY LOWDER, we would have understood what you were talking about!!!!!! ;D ;) ;D ;)

The BCA needs to stop talking and enact the plans they so much talk about year after year. Turner Gill, the hottest African-American coach right now, did interview for Syracuse and Auburn.

It ain't like he was interviewing for Wisconsin-Stevens Point and no BCS school called him.

Now if he was interviewing at Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the BCA would tell him he couldn't find a better job in the country. ;-)

If the HC at Duluth, who just won the D-II title can win at Eau Claire (in which he did), anyone can win there! ;)
