  1. I'm still not quite able to digest this move, having seen the press conference video, read the reports on AL.com and elsewhere.

My initial reaction still holds true: What, they couldn't get Doug Barfield to come out of retirement?

    Sheesh.

Here's an interesting take on the Auburn/Chizik fandango:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/93946-intrigue-conspiracy-and-a-great-story-may-have-gotten-gene-chizik-a-job#

Nobody really goes on the record, but given past performance it's entirely believable to think Jimmy Sexton certainly pulled some strings -- if he didn't instigate the whole thing in the first place.

I mean, if you're an coach's agent, you represent many different coaches, and you negotiate for one of your clients one of these "golden ejection seat" clauses -- if the school even talks to anyone else, they are in breach of contract and have to pay him off immediately -- can't you basically manipulate them into breaching that contract any time you feel like it??

I'd dismiss this as wild web speculation but given that it involves Jimmy Sexton I can absolutely see this as being pretty close to accurate.

There have been reports that Saban's contract at Alabama contains a clause to the effect that if either party wishes to terminate the contract, for any reason, at any time before its expiration, the University must make a lump sum payment to the Coach equal to the entire value of the contract.

Read that one again.

From what I understand, there are a couple misconceptions about his contract. I know we've got some Bama people on here, so if someone could clear this up, it would be appreciated.

I believe I've heard that Saban's contract doesn't get absolutely sickening until he reaches a certain year of the deal, at which point he's given a "length" bonus that brings him to the 8-year, $32-million mark. Part of the buyout, then, that says that if either party (he leaves or is fired) that pays him is the total minus that length bonus. It's still outrageous, but considering he needed a lot of money after his "I'm not going to Alabama" rant, it's slightly more believable.

Sexton and Saban have made a career out of making "OMFG-I-don't-believe-anybody-would-even-ask-for-this-and-I-REALLY-don't-believe-anybody-would-be-so-stupid-to-give-it-to-them" contract demands, and then getting them.

Alabama was desperate. They had climbed all the way out on a very shaky branch, and it was being chopped down behind them. They had reached a point where they had to bring in Saban at virtually any cost, under virtually any conditions Sexton saw fit to name.

Isn't his contract a public document or has Bama found some way around this?

Can anybody with insight tell me what the hell has happened to Auburn? Was Saban's success at Alabama so terrifying that they just shit themselves at the slightest hint of adversity? They went from the most consistent SEC program of the past decade to an absolute joke in a period of three months. How is Jay Jacobs still employed? This whole thing just blows my mind.

That would be some excellent analysis of the situation. And the AD is Bobby Lowder's lap buddy, so that explains his bumbling. Did they interview EVERY coach in the country? That search had more leaks than OJ's alibi.

Are any of the state universities in Alabama run by intelligent people? Between this and the Auburn Board of Trustees, I have to figure the answer is "hellfuckno."

Aren't the "articles" at Bleacher Report, including that one, written by fans?

Yes, and many of their premises are lifted directly from talk radio/mainstream columnist speculation ...
