There's been a lot of movement in Ames. Pollard called Buffalo's AD to speak with Gill. Gill says no and then signed his extension. Fulmer's name was mentioned this morning, and unconfirmed report is that Mike Stoops and Pollard are close to finalizing a deal for him to leave Arizona after their bowl game Saturday and come to ISU.

Again, that is speculation and unconfirmed. The boards have been running and leaning towards the Stoops angle, but I'm going to wait until someone in the local media has credible proof of that.

I've been hearing since last summer that Stoops was either going to get fired if UA didn't go to a bowl game or he was going to bolt at the first opportunity if they did go to one.

For that reason I wouldn't dismiss him as a possibility.

I guess Stoops is surprised he hasn't received a raise. He received an extension two years ago through 2010 but no boost in pay. He's got a better shot at success staying at UA than ISU.

He also has a better shot of being fired after next year in Tucson.

Which is why the rumor to Ames has some legs. Why else would he want to face his brother, on average, every other year? Oklahoma will continue to smoke Iowa State.

Gary Pinkel has gotten a handsome raise as Missouri prepares to cut a substantial percentage of university employees.

Very nice, a week before Christmas.

Stan Parrish to take over for Hoke at Ball State. Parrish was the first Marshall head coach to post a winning record after the 1970 plane crash. He left in the mid-80s and got pummeled at Kansas State where he was replaced by.....Bill Snyder.

So, Stoops leaves and Dick Tomey returns to Arizona, which never should have fired him in the first place?

I'm sure Ames is a very nice community but I couldn't imagine leaving Tucson for Ames, unless they offered me half of Iowa. And that might not be enough. But whatever floats your boat.

I think this really gets some legs if BYU smokes the "Cats in Vegas, which there's a very good chance of.

Not much different than publishers and CEOs continuing to get fat bonuses, while the worker bees, whether in newspapers or elsewhere in Corporate America, get thrown out head-first.

But Gary Pinkel can argue he's done something positive for the place wqhere he works.

Yeah. Can't argue that one. And somehow, it's pretty doubtful that he's asking his players and coaching staff to "do more with less."

Stoops isn't off the heat in Arizona. It's just been turned down to simmer. They had only one true quality win this year and finished 5-4 in a Pac-10 that featured three of the worst teams I've ever seen in the conference -- Wazzu, UW and UCLA -- and two more that were just flat-out really, really bad in Stanford and ASU.

Were this even a decent year in the Pac-10, 'Zona misses a bowl and Stoops is back to being a DC. Would it be stunning if he's fired if BYU lays the wood? Considering the upheaval in the men's basketball program, it's probably out of the question. Livengood has bigger fish to fry.
