Spurrier's not going anywhere. As I recall, College Football Talk "broke" the Sylvester Croom firing two years ago too. When Spurrier goes, he'll feed the story to someone he's tight with like Pat Dooley in Gainesville. It will not be on Mike Florio's radar.

  2. Mike Florio, sorry.

You never know with Spurrier, but the big question mark in that story was the part about wanting Spurrier Jr. to succeed him. Unlike Holtz, that's never been a big deal to Spurrier. And he's smart enough to know the current SC administration isn't going to go for that.

Intriguing...and yet, I don't see it happening. I would think if he went anywhere, it'd be to join Bobby at OU. With all of the talk of Venables being linked to various HC coaching jobs around the nation (Clemson and K-State), I don't see BV staying at OU if the Sooner athletic department can't match the salary he's going to get somewhere else.

Barney's swallowed the slangy, talking-head Kool-Aid in a big way.

    Beats working, I guess.

People can say what they want about him and it's probably deserved, but the guy is a hell of a coach.

Yes, I know I'm bumping up this thread for a couple of bottom-of-the-barrel openings, but two Mountain West teams are now looking for coaches: San Diego State (my alma mater) has fired Chuck Long, and Wyoming has canned Joe Glenn.

Anybody know some under-the-radar coaches or assistants who might be available for either of these schools. Of course, SDSU is about as low as its ever been since I remember, but I believe with the right coach it should be able to at least compete in the conference. And although the best prospects in the SD area usually go to the BCS schools, it still is a strong-enough talent base that they can get some talent locally and succeed.

    Charlie Strong can't talk.
    Honestly.
That isn't a racial thing or him having a white wife.
He interviewed for my alma mater's job nearly a decade ago.
The program was making the move from the NAIA to D2 and eventually I-AA.
He was a finalist and got passed over because Strong couldn't talk.
He can coach, but he doesn't have the other skills you need to be a head coach of a major program, of any program.
    It sucks for him.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the opening at the I-AA juggernaut Chattanooga.

John L. Smith's name has already been tossed out for the opening in Laramie. If Wyoming could snare him, that would be a nice get.

As for San Diego, that program is at a serious low point. Talent will go there for the program, nice weather, etc. Sleeping giant? No. But certainly a place for an up-and-comer to cut his teeth and get the BCS-level gig.

That would mean installing double doors with extra head clearance. The ego and baggage aren't a nifty fit.
