Yeah, Holtz could not tap into the most fertile recruiting ground in the country.

Yet, Louisiana Tech thinks he will there.

Too bad about Leavitt. He had that deal pretty much figured out when he got himself fired.

What did he get fired for? Can't remember.

Hit a player in the locker room, then tried to cover it up. I recall the reporting afterwards saying that the cover up -- trying to get players to lie about it, for example -- is what really cost him his job. I think he's on the 49ers staff now.

Haven't people been saying Clemson has "arrived" for a number of years, then they always seem to lose one game they should win?

I think this might be Clemson's best team in a decade. But the real reason I'm bullish on them is the schedule. Just a lot fewer landmines than what Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, Oregon, Stanford or Notre Dame will face.

He head-butted a kid, then went into a postgame presser with a bruise.

If Clemson gets through undefeated beating Georgia, Florida State, South Carolina and winning the ACC championship game, then it's earned its way into the BCS title game. But if they are among a group of one-loss teams I don't think they will get the benefit of the doubt of the computers coming out of the ACC.

It could be an interesting argument though if they lose to Florida State, but beat Georgia and South Carolina.

OK, thanks. Not exactly Woody Hayes, but thanks for the reminder.

I would be more concerned about them getting ambushed by a lesser team on a week when they aren't paying attention. They'll have their A game when they play FSU and South Carolina.

With the way the system is now, I think every team, regardless of conference, has to take the approach of "we need to go undefeated to make our case". Then, if you are like Georgia and lose early, then you go to Plan B.

With Clemson, it depends on how Georgia and South Carolina end up. Figure one of them should be in the SEC title game. If Georgia somehow wins the thing, we could see a non-SEC BCS - But Clemson can't afford a loss.

One of the things I love about the non-conference season you can get a pretty decent evaluation of how conferences stack up against each other (as long as teams are willing to play other BCS schools).

Florida could spoil all that. Still not great on offense, but I thought they looked awfully salty with their running game and defense against a pretty good Toledo team.

I don't think Florida can win a national title, but I do think they can win the East. But I thought they had some breaks go their way last year and that might even out this year. Certainly evened out in the bowl game...
