On one hand, I feel badly that UAB won't get one more game. On the other hand, I believe a bowl game's directors and community would be horrified to have a dead program filling one of their slots.

I'd like to see a six-team playoff, and not just because there were six worthy teams this year. Give 1 and 2 byes to reward the best regular seasons, then have a first round of 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5.

Try to imagine the screams when the only defeated team of the six doesn't get one of the byes.

Probably how the Ticket City Bowl folks felt in 2012 when Kevin Sumlin left for
A&M and Tony Levine was named HC ;)

True, but it's better than being left out. Send the 5 and 6 teams on the road to the 3-4. Pick up the semis and natl championship as constructed.

NCAA rules require 12 teams for a conference championship, no? I believe divisions are required too.

Right now, I'd probably go Michigan State and Mississippi State. They can't claim to be the best, but I wouldn't mind them getting a shot to prove it given their body of work.
The idea of using eight teams is more of a way to guarantee that a power conference winner doesn't get left out. If you win one of those conferences it's quite an accomplishment and should be rewarded in this system. You also leave wiggle room for the Notre Dames and Boise States of the world, as well as for the rare occasions when you have several one-loss teams from multiple conferences who deserve to be there.
Somebody will always get screwed, but it shouldn't be a champion or a team that lost one game at the wrong time who gets it.

If you were going to do that, I'd agree with those 7-8 teams. Both have pretty high ceilings.

I still think you'd have pretty much the same arguments from 9-10 teams as you do now from 5-6 teams. I understand the arguments against that, I just think in reality, somebody's always going to think they have legitimate gripes.

The conference can petition the NCAA for a waiver.

The Big 12 and ACC both put in for one during the spring. Still waiting an NCAA response. Big 12 is seeking permission with 10 teams (adding two more teams would would cost current members $4.2 million annually on TV money, per Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News), and the ACC wants to go back to one group, no divisions.
