CSU is kind of screwed. You need more home games and sellouts to pay that stadium off, so they can't take a bunch of paycheck games. Surprised they aren't playing BYU every year.

Agreed, but since the Big XII pulled TCU up from wreckage of the Big East and brought them aboard every other wannabe is going to try. TCU also had one of the best football programs outside of P5 at that time which made them more attractive.

The other thing is - the CFP puts a definite ceiling on G5 schools. They'll get one of the Big Six, but never get to the four because their schedules just won't be good enough. Even if they beat a powerhouse which should boost their stock - odds are it will hurt the team they beat more than it will help the G5 school.

If you enjoy mediocre (at best) football, 60,000 drunks and the overwhelming stench of weed crammed into one convenient locale, well then this is the game for you.

Son of a bitch, I need to go to this game someday.

As the fan of basketball-only school in the Big East, thank you for reminding me how glad I am they ditched football.

Big East football schools should have gone off on their own in 1990. The hybrid model required cooperation that was never going to happen.

Actually drew 32,000 last year. Not saying it's super fantastic, but it is the highest in both average attendance and total attendance in school history. The stadium made money last year too and should be paid off just fine. The university is exploding in all areas. So saying it could have been used for school improvements doesn't work. Additionally, the money likely only could have been gotten for a stadium. It's not general fund money. Unfortunately athletics doesn't match what the school as a whole is doing, but they are trying. If you saw what the campus looks like today as compared to 20 years ago you wouldn't even think it's the same place.

Getting into a P5 is probably a pipe dream but CSU is one of the only ones in its peer group that isn't in a P5. Just luck of the draw from many, many years ago. TV market is going to play less of a role moving forward in all likely, but being number 16 is a pretty decent draw and it's not like Fort Collins to Denver is ridiculous. Plenty of other "P5" areas that can't say the same. I live in Fort Collins and do it all the time. CSU has a lot to offer. I also think most of this would have been done anyway, P5 thoughts or not. Hughes was a costly dump and far away from campus. The new stadium is so much better on every level and is used all the time for all sorts of things unlike Hughes, which got unlocked maybe a dozen times a year.

As for football, the Hawaii game was a joke and Bobo doesn't seem to be cutting it. Guess let's see what happens with CU this week.

Colorado leaving for the Pac-12 was terrible for everyone.

To be fair to CSU, Hawaii always seems to show up to play in games like these and a lot of that team was probably looking ahead to the CU game this week.

The school borrowed money for the stadium. The state guaranteed it. At two percent interest over 30 years the payment is 10 million a year. The naming rights were sold for about 2.5 million dollars a year. So the net cost for just the stadium is about 7.5 million dollars a year less whatever they received in donations. The city limits other events in the stadium so that revenue is capped. So I am pretty sure that the stadium is not covering the mortgage on an attendance of 32,000 a game (my bad on the attendance) when other costs of the program are considered.

Who, other than the state, would be covering the cash flow deficit unless the student fees were increased?

As for the school exploding I assume that means enrollment continues to increase as the population of the state increases. Who is paying for the extra facilities for these students.

If you know where a financial statement is could you link it.

I am not sure who's CSU's peer group is. It is certainly self-selected. For example I am unsure why Utah State is not in their peer group. But the schools in thier peer group whoa re in the Power Five are there because of legacy conference commitments from 60-100 years ago. If Iowa State had not been in the Big 8 they would not be a Power Five conference now.

It seems to ahve been so far. CU thought the Pac-12 television network would be a goldmine but it has not been. But in fairness to CU they were wondering how long the Big 12 would last. Which is still an open question.

Better hurry. This year and next year are it for the game in Denver. 2020 in Fort Collins. Then two years off. Then 2023 in Boulder and 2024 in Fort Collins.

Nothing else beyond that though it sounds like they'll go two years on, two years off.
