The very odd thing about Notre Dame is that the game they looked their most dominant was at Oklahoma, which might be the toughest win by anybody in the country all year. (Alabama over LSU being the other contender.)

I don't understand how they can put the hammer down then and against Navy and be so close to mediocrity the other 75 percent of the time.

Notre Dame's win at Oklahoma is the most impressive of the season thus far. It's just that the rest of their wins don't really do anything for me.

The thing with Notre Dame's schedule is that there are no Western Michigans or Western Carolinas or Eastern Palooka States. It's the most legitimate schedule out there probably. The weakest link is BC, which was pretty good a few years ago.

The last thing Notre Dame can be faulted for is scheduling cupcakes like many SEC or Pac 12 teams.

Another underrated crop of palookas: Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Auburn, Tennessee. Oh and Miss State looks like the fraud of the year. There is no good fucking reason why South Carolina and LSU are ranked where they are.

This. The difference in the Oklahoma game is Golson didn't commit any turnovers or bad mistakes in that game, which can't be said for his performance most of the year.

I love ND's defense, but at the most important position, QB, they come out by far the worst of the four teams. Which quite likely will be what eventually does them in.

Although I kind of agree with your premise, one reason South Carolina and LSU are ranked where they are is who do you have going ahead of them? The Big Ten, the ACC and the Pac 12 are each very mediocre. Each has only one elite team. Outside K-State and Oklahoma, you can't definitively say any of the teams in the Big 12 is better than decent. There's just a bunch of mediocrity in college football right now.

I think I'm just jaded with all the annual fawning over the SEC. I'd watch the Pac-12 Network but I have DirecTV.

I'd put Oklahoma ahead of both of Carolina & LSU. Carolina especially now that Lattimore is out. With the exception of Kansas I think the bottom half of the Big 12 is as good or better than the bottom half of the SEC this year.

Of course now that I've posted that the Sooners will probably lose to Baylor.

Big 12 has a lot of mediocre teams who take turns beating up on each other. Texas Tech, TCU, West Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma State. Doesn't seem much to separate them on any given week.

Since when is Navy not a mid-major? (Pending membership in the LOL East doesn't qualify.) And why do people always have a fetish for determining a conference's quality by looking at the 7th-12th place teams? That's like saying the NFC isn't any good because you aren't impressed with the Redskins or Seahawks.
