There are no Aggie exes. There are only "former students" ... "Once an Aggie, always an Aggie".

My Texas leanings run strong toward the Longhorns (cashing UT system paychecks and sending two kiddlee-dees off to the Forty Acres for college will do that to you) but I have a lot of good friends who are Aggies. They can be kinda nuts, but don't ever think they're not genuine. Being an Aggie means one helluva lot to them.

I edited too many “He was buried in his Ohio State sweatshirt and sweatpants and skipped his own wife’s funeral to watch the 1996 Purdue game where Stanley Jackson was ejected for kicking someone in the nuts. He never got over it —the ejection” obits to question that.

There's a lot of ways to look at this. Penn State, as a program, might have a ceiling right now. And Franklin can get them 10 wins and a Rose Bowl here and there. I think he's done it four times. And they are probably the only team in the current Big Ten that can actually compete with Michigan and Ohio State over four quarters.

Right now Penn State isn't an elite program. The talent base to recruit in Pennsylvania isn't as good as it was 30 years ago. Penn State also does well in New Jersey and parts of Ohio and along the beltway, but so many other programs go through those areas now too. The brand just doesn't have the same appeal right now that it did back in the day.

And with the 12-team playoff coming into reality soon. Having a coach that can get you to 10 wins is going to be a nice luxury because 10 wins will always put you in the discussion for a playoff spot. A program that's dumping a coach that won the Rose Bowl last year and is probably headed to another 10-11 win season this year is begging to become the next Nebraska.

You are what your record says you are. PSU/ Franklin is 1-12 vs top 5 teams.

Maybe they should just rename the Big 10, the Big Scandal.

Northwestern - Pat Fitzgerald hazing deal
Mich. State - Mel Tucker letting his fingers do the walking.
    Michigan - Sign stealing
Ohio State - Spending $50 million on settlements for the Strauss sex abuse but denying they ever "admitted" wrongdoing. HM - Ryan Day beef with Lou Holtz. Partnering with Rutgers to provide signal intel to Purdue.
Wisconsin - player settles sex assault allegation with payout.
    Minnesota - "toxic culture"
    Iowa - No offense
    Nebraska - they suck
Rutgers - see Ohio State scandal
Purdue - see Ohio State scandal
    Penn State - See Iowa.
    Indiana - Actually - they're OK.
Maryland - nothing since DJ Durkin.
Illinois - Clean for the last eight years.

During Florida State's first real stretch of having excellent teams under Bobby Bowden (1985-1994) they were 2-8 vs. Miami. In probably 4 or 5 of those games the difference between being a top 5 team and winning a championship was beating Miami. The FSU fanbase was often heartbroken at losing to Miami, but in spite of that there wasn't talk of putting Bowden on any sort of hot seat. That was for two reasons.

    1) There were emotional, but not fucking stupid.
    2) The only reason the games were important with Miami is because FSU's Bowden teams were beating everyone else.

That's where Franklin is. Penn State people might hate losing to these top 5 Ohio State/Michigan teams, but the only reason it matters is because they have consistently won against the rest of the conference. Start consistently losing to the Purdues, Minnesotas and Marylands of the world and then there's a problem.
