Rising star. He was in The Blind Side (at least the book) as, I believe, the chief recruiter for Mississippi. Which is to say, he played a big role in landing Michael Oher. Very good hire. It might be a risk, but Mississippi could use a risk.

Someone remind me again why there's a pressing need for conference championship games. (See Pac 10/12/whatever.)

After Auburn beats Alabama later this afternoon, we can all get back to talking about LSU v. Okie State in the BCS NCG.

But Chef, what happens then if Oklahoma beats State, which could well happen? Then we'd have the leading contenders to play LSU all with two losses -- except for now for Va. Tech and Boise. Of course, the system would probably still pick Alabama, just rubbing everyone's nose in the fact it's a rigged crap game. Also, of course, Alabama won't lose today, or even be threatened by the possibility. How is Auburn ranked in the Top 25 anyway?

Freeze is basically Gus Malzahn lite ... which I guess means they couldn't get Malzahn.

Seems like Freeze would be a good hire, though. For one thing, he'd be able to recruit Memphis, which is loaded with blue-chippers every year if you can get any of them eligible.

He's also done a great job at Arkansas State, which is 9-2 overall and 7-0 in the Sun Belt headed into next Saturday's game against Troy (only losses are at Illinois and at Virginia Tech). ASU hadn't won more than six games in a season since 1978, when they were a I-A member of the Southland Conference.

And yeah, Freeze was actually Oher's high school coach at Briarcrest Christian in Memphis. Not coincidentally, he joined the Ole Miss staff — first as an assistant AD, then as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator — after Oher signed with the Rebels.

Tide lost. At their place. That's the way it goes.

Give Houston their props. They did what the needed to do, in fine style.

Too bad for them their broad schedule remains a comic book.

What? I thought Peyton was going to get it?

    Lifted from a UT board:

I just visited with an old friend I grew up with in Chattanooga who is head of the Honors Program in the History Dept at Ole Miss.

He said he talked to Archie last week at the Ole Miss-LSU game and asked him about the Ole Miss fans who want Peyton to be their new coach. Archie told my friend he called Peyton and told him a lot of people wanted him to replace Nutt as HC. Peyton's reply, "I don't know why, I am 0-10 as an assistant coach!"

Clearly, Ben thinks Boise is the team to play. If Alabama losing (essentially tying) @home to #1 is worse than losing by double digits on the road or losing (essentially tying) a team who is barely bowl eligible on the road while playing absurdly awful, then Boise's missed fg. vs a team who has played in the BCS before is a better resume.

    I would almost buy that.

I mentioned split NC last week because I feel it would be fair and accurate without a third game. Given Bama plays and beats LSU.

Little late to the party but wanted to add that when it comes to the Greatest Teams of All-Time list, that Mike Rozier, Tom Rathman, Irving Fryer, Dean Steinkuhler, Turner Gill and the rest of the 1983 Nebraska Cornhuskers would like to say hi.
