My man Paul Krebs, working his magic.

First Meyer, now this. New Mexico will benefit greatly.

That's why I'll be interested in seeing how Alford spins this one. When he went to Iowa, he kept talking about how he's a Big Ten person at heart, how he'll take the program to the next level and how he could see himself retiring there.

Now, 8 mostly-mediocre and often-embarrassing seasons later, he's going to New Mexico? Even he has to realize that he was a colossal failure there.

On a side note, it sounds like Bobby Knight was quite the puppet-master to get this one done.

3. Add Penn State womens coach Rene Portland to the list.
She resigned this morning. Not a suprise. Aside the Lesbian harrassment allegations, PSU hasn't been among the elite teams in womens hoops for a few years.

Penn State womenás basketball coach Rene Portland resigns
By GENARO C. ARMAS
AP Sports Writer
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ä Penn State womenás basketball coach Rene Portland resigned, ending a 27-year tenure that included 605 wins and allegations she discriminated against lesbian players.
Portland resigned Wednesday night, the university said in a statement.
The coach faced a series of discrimination allegations during her tenure. Most recently, Portland settled a lawsuit in February by former player Jennifer Harris, who claimed Portland had a ààno-lesbianáá policy on her team.
Portland built the team into a powerhouse, though the program had slipped to subpar records in recent seasons.
ààThis was obviously a difficult decision,áá Portland said in Thursdayás statement. ààI am very appreciative of the opportunity to coach at Penn State, which has become a special place for me and my family. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish with the Lady Lion program through the years.áá

That would be a complete turnaround in program philosophy, wouldn't it?

God, it seems like years ago that New Mexico was actually a great job.

And if Marshall takes the South Florida job they better make him pee in a cup first. He'd have to be on drugs. It would be a dumb, dumb, dumb move. Arguably, Winthrop is a better job right now. And the man has to have some vision. He'd be in line for any of the major jobs in that area when they're next open.

It was inevitable. Her homophobia's been a distraction for a long time, and finally reached the point where it was hurting the program. Did she jump, or was she pushed?

Hear through the MAAC grapevine (yes, there is one) that Jeff Ruland is out at Iona.

Wow. I kind of thought he had a lifetime ticket there. Hate to revel in anyone's tough times, but sometimes temptation is strong.

Edit: Yikes ... just looked up his record for this year. Had no idea the Gaels went 2-28. Had I realized his team was losing to this degree I really would have paid more attention. In fairness, they were slated for rebuilding and then he did lose his top recruit to academics in the summer. Then again, that guy was going to Iona because he couldn't make grades at bigger schools.

Any bets on where Ruland lands?

Ruland was, indeed, send packing this morning. His crime was not so much the 2-28 a season after being in the NCAA Tournament, as it was having the 2-28 a season after saying "I'd walk down I-95 for the Seton Hall job" ... which pissed off just a few people at Iona.

Funny thing is, Seton Hall would have been a lot better off with Ruland than Gonzo, who will not make it past next year in South Orange, NJ.

Maybe Ruland -- who is a good coach -- lands at USF. Hey, it's the Big East!

Princeton's conducting a national search to replace Scott and might go outside the family:

Pete Carrill 1967-1996 (Carrill played for Van Breda Kolff in the 50s at Lafayette)
Bill Carmody 1996-2000 (Carmody was an assistant of Carrill's and played for Walters when he coached at Union College in the 1970s)
John Thompson III 2000-2004 (played for Carrill and Carmody before becoming one of Carmody's assistants at Princeton)
Joe Scott 2004-2007 (played for Carrill and Carmody and was one of Carmody's assistants)

There are rumors, Joe, that Carmody might be coming back to Princeton.
