That signing stuns Islanders GM Garth Snow.

Fennelly was the only major coach at Iowa State not to get whacked since new AD Jamie Pollard rolled into town.

Monson had seven full seasons to coach there after taking over when Haskins left. He left at the start of year eight and was given 1.3 as a parting gift. Letting Humphries and his family run things for a year was not a good choice on Monson's part.

And the best coach ISU had going before Pollard rolled into Ames swinging an ax. Fennelly is one of the good guys in the women's game. Great listen and feisty as hell on the floor, and he can coach his ass off in every game.

There was talk that Eustachy could be a candidate for the Long Beach job. He's from that area.

Word out of Arkansas is Stan Heath has been fired/bought out. Gillespie is the Razorbacks' No. 1 target.

    Forgot the link...

ESPN's streamer just said that Katz was reporting Heath's firing.

Good thought, but given the nice arena A&M has and the contract he already has, I wonder what it would take for Arkansas to actually lure Gillespie away, because Arkansas seems like it would be a lateral move.

But it's the SEC. That makes it an automatic step up [/fanboys]

I don't know. But that's the word I got from some guys in Fayetteville. The Arkansas officials seem to think $1.5 million per + that arena + the SEC = Gillespie in Fayetteville.

Maybe, but at least Virginia Tech has support. the Bulls don't draw well to the Sun Dome, and even when they do it's because of the opponent.

It doesn't strike me as though there's much school pride there, even the football team doesn't draw as well as it probably should given it's success. The basketball team would need to go out and be in the top four in the conference for it to make a serious ripple, and I don't see that happening any time soon.

The overriding issue is that Tampa is still a commuter town. What happens with USF is what happens with the D-Rays when the Yankees and Red Sox come to town. The Lightning had to threaten to win a title before people started showing up en masse and in hometown jerseys, not the Rangers, Bruins or Dead Things ones they grew up wearing.

Morning guy on the local sports talk station insists on pronouncing Gillespie's name "Juh-les-pee." No, that's not right. It's "Guh-les-pee."

And in today's Dallas Morning News, A&M's board of regents is going to vote on a raise for Billy Clyde along with a $1 million bonus if he stays through the end of his contract, which is in 2012. Those Aggies have deep pockets; wonder if Arkansas can outbid 'em?
