Webby could have Lee Roy Selmon come knock on my door, and it wouldn't matter. The truth is my best defense.

    I guess those feelers to Gillispie, Self and Floyd didn't pan out . . . . . .

God I hope so. I read that Altman -- who is a great coach, but a classic stiff -- did it very awkwardly a couple of times.

To confirm Bubbler, it did happen a few times. It sounded like (I listened to the presser on radio) Broyles led the Hog call and Altman looked around as if to say "what the fuck are you people doing?" It was even worse when Broyles gave him the t-shirt and the cap to put on. Altman was putting that stuff on the table so fast you could say "Pig Pen" four times. He didn't want none of the hoopla. He wanted to go to work immediately.

    Funny shit.

Hey, don't forget Dan Dakich is available. And they'll probably be able to get him to stay this time.

That's what a lot of people said when they hired Ferentz to replace Hayden Fry. He's worked out ok.

Good point. I was a student at Iowa when that happened, and everyone on campus (and beyond) was in WTF mode. Once Ferentz got past the initial 1-10 season to start, he's been amazing.
As long as Lickliter can bring in talent that can win in the Big 10 and win NCAA games - be it 58-54 or 85-84 - I'm perfectly happy. And you guys are right... no one will ever confuse Iowa's economics and cash flow for Ohio State any time soon.

Does UK give Donovan $5 mil per for the job?
If so, does Florida try and match it?

That's interesting that you were still in school when the Ferentz deal went down. I was a year out of college when my old man and me looked at each other and went: "WTF did Ann Rhodes and Mary Sue Coleman do to piss Stoops off and get this guy (Ferentz)?"

Correct me if I'm wrong, Big Red, but didn't Stoops expected Bowlsby to give him the job without an interview and Rhodes and Coleman stepped in and said that Stoops had to go through the process, which led him to Oklahoma?

Don't know if that's exactly it but it was something like that. Stoops basically told Iowa, "If you want me, hire me now."

That was midway through my junior year, and here's what happened.
Yes, it was a case of why a one-man show in a coaching search is so much better than a "search committee."
The committee - Rhodes, Coleman, and others - expected Stoops to interview with them.
Stoops said no, and by the time any of them had a chance to change their minds, he was being introduced at Oklahoma. It looked like a colossal blunder at the time, but Iowa got Ferentz - a guy whose name most of us on campus didn't even know how to pronounce - and he's done amazing things there.
Hopefully Lickliter can do the same.
