Reports out of Tampa indicate USF has offered their job to Gregg Marshall with a decision to accept or not imminent.

I guess we'll soon find out if USF is the basketball wasteland one poster here said it was. Any insight, Webby?

Anybody with options who takes that job is batshit insane.

That's what I had heard, BYH.

Problem with Marshall, though, is he needs to stay out of the carousel for a while UNLESS he's absolutely sure. Winthrop has probably forgiven him for the College of Charleston mess, but I would think he's still a bit on watch.

But. . .but . . . .Alford was supposed to coach Indiana!!!!!!!!! [/dorkswhocan'tletgoofBobbyKnight]

Also . . . wasn't there a time when Knight was looking to leave Indiana for New Mexico, in the late 1980s?

In other decidedly minor news, 2007 NCAA Tournament team Long Beach State is looking for a new coach. Job could have been Alford's if he had been patient.

I said that. They're easily the 16th school in the Big East, and while they're languishing with the likes of Seton Hall and Rutgers, both of those schools are a lot closer to viable basketball hotspots.

USF just has too much going against for the Bulls to compete in the Big East. Not saying it's impossible, but it's highly, highly improbable that anyone can succeed there.

Really the only dorks who said that were national media types outside of Indiana.

There wasn't much support for Alford within Indiana because people there saw his comparative lack of success and took a pass. Even some of the Mike Davis-haters noted that Davis finished ahead of Alford more often than not.

And ... he's kind of an egotistical ass by most accounts.

I thought he did one of his finest coaching jobs this year. Iowa was much better this season than I expected.

Last year's team was very good. They just got caught napping at the wrong time. I actually think he's a good coach. He just mishandled the Pierre Pierce situation, and was never accepted as an Indiana guy coaching at Iowa. This will likely be move that's a good one for Iowa, New Mexico, and Steve Alford.

It probably isn't career suicide for Marshall because people will understand how difficult the USF job is, however, I'll be shocked if he can win there. There are about 5-6 jobs in the Big East right now that are just hopeless situations. Even if these schools get better, they are only going to be scratching and clawing to make the Big East tournament. The only chance some of these schools may have is if they split the conference.

Alford would do a great job at Indiana. Steve Alford coaching at Indiana is quite a bit different than Steve Alford coaching at Iowa.

Also, the New Mexico job is infinitely better than Long Beach State.

Colorado State is off the clock. The Rams hired North Dakota State's Miles.

Wyoming, the next selection is yours.

I don't have much respect for Marshall, but what little is left will be toast if he leaves (again) this year.

Mr. New Suit pulled his little crying act and talked about how he just wanted to coach at Winthrop and how big a mistake he made in leaving. IIRC, the prez or the AD basically told him he's welcome back, but not if he's looking to turn around and bolt at the next opportunity.

Will certainly be interesting to see what he does this summer.
