They aren't in a hurry. The only thing this columnist needs to be in place for is football in August. Basketball kept them busy in March, too.

Plus, they put the word out early to make sure they got the right person.

You might want to go back and read the original job posting, which says ``Our goal is to have our new columnist on the job no later than August 1, 2007.'' They were taking their time on this from the beginning.

As for Mizzougrad's ``scoop'' about the pay (``I've heard the pay for this gig isn't great, probably less than $60K'') I heard that, too -- in the job posting.

    ``Salary range $1,039.60 – $1,145.30 per week''

That's 54,059.20-59,555.60 per year for you mathematically challenged folks out there.

You probably should if you're going to rip them for taking so long to fill the position.

Eugene is a great city and Bellamy is indeed a great guy. But the pay for this position is a problem. You can't buy a decent house within 10 miles of Eugene for less than $200,000, maybe even $300,000. I'm really surprised that it pays so little.

I know this job was turned down at least once, but the last I heard George Schroeder was going to take it... Does anyone know if this happened?

If they get Schroeder, it will be a great hire...

Mizzou, are you talking about the Daily Oklahoman guy? If so, why would that be a great hire? Dude has spent his entire career in the Dust Bowl, in towns that care only about football -- not exactly a career track that hints at greatness in the People's Republic of Eugene, where basketball, track and baseball also have substantial followings.

One of Schroeder's coworkers told me he was heading to Eugene. And I'm with Mizzou on this being a good hire.

  11. George is the goods. He'll be just fine. Have to agree with Mizzou - a great hire.

You're wrong on this one - dreadfully wrong . Nobody has worked harder to get where they are today than George has.

He deserves this job. And he'll do a great job.
