  1. The new guy on VT - if he continues to work hard - is a future star in this game. I'm a little biased because he's a friend, but he's probably the best overall "writer" on that beat while the red head is the best "reporter". The other guy on the beat is the best combination of writing and reporting. Three talented-ass dudes (not to mention young and cool) on one beat. It must be fun.

Yeah, but you're missing the point. The old guy sucks!

You guys are killing me. You are congratulating moving a kid from part-time to the Redskins? Since when do you look to develop talent on an NFL beat? Give me a freaking break. If this guy was a minority or even a woman, this board would be overflowing with criticism. But since he is one of your old boys, this is being championed as a great move. This guy may be talented, but I am disgusted.

18 posts and just as bitter as your first day here. Why do you post here if you loathe everyone so much? You're obviously a very unhappy person.

Ordinarily, I would agree that moving a kid up that fast is out of order, but I saw Michael Phillips' resume and clips before he graduated (or shortly thereafter), and I was blown away. Young dude has some serious chops.

Major chops. Came in with talent and a work ethic to boot.
We were under a strict 29.5 hours per work limit for our PTers. I gave him an assignment during Virginia-Virginia Tech week that I hoped he could get a big start on and I'd either finish the rest myself or find someone else.
He finished it all, finished it well and did a bunch of other stuff that week, too.

His first night on prep desk, where one of our high school staff sits in the office to coordinate all the roundups, graphics, etc., our desk chief tells me he's short. Duh. We're always short. Anyway, he wants Michael to take on another task that night, one that requires a ton of coding, etc. Be careful, I said. Don't overload. He blew both jobs away and looked for more.

Don't even think of making race an issue with this one. I badly wanted to make him FT before I left. I'm glad they got around to doing it.

    Dear Dick Cider,

I come here for comedy. I use to show up regularly but now about every two or three weeks will do. I see nothing has changed. Someone talked about this kid's chops and someone else mentioned all the desk shifts the he picked up or something of that sort. I want to know what stories has he broke, what sources does he have? He will be eaten alive by the Washington Post and Washington Times along with ESPN and espn.com. But I guess that is okay because he pulled some extra desk shifts.

Fine, scoop. But guess what? Richmond wasn't hiring from outside. No money for that. So what would have been your other suggestion? Michael will not only be great at his job, but he's got thick enough skin to not let assholes like you get under it.

For a guy who is "here for comedy", you're awfully nosy. Please don't post again on this thread. It's probably not funny enough anyway.

    Geez, Scoop.

    Eat sour grapes often?

Now you guys want to kick me off the board? I'm hurt. Sour grapes. I think not. But since I'm not wanted, guess I will have to come around more often. And playthrough thanks for calling me nosey. That's an attribute all journalists should strive for. Hope you learned something today.

I'd prefer if this thread were not locked just yet, which is the direction this is clearly heading, because there's a conversation in all of this that I'd like to see fleshed out a bit more. If you sift through scoop's assholery, he's right about this:

I've hesitated to post on this thread, because I know a number of the folks who already have and they have all gone to bat for this lucky young reporter. I guess I'm just blown away that a state-wide newspaper, with 200k-plus circulation, would promote a part-time prep writer directly to its full-time NFL beat, regardless of that reporter's "chops."

That said, best of luck Michael.
