Maybe his accountants reminded him to get a byline-and-dateline so he could write off his vacation as a work trip for the IRS.

Hmmmm, so an American sports columnist can just show up in a foreign country and on the spot be issued a credential to one of the world's most prestigious sporting events at one of the most blueblood of clubs. Without his editor even knowing about it ...

Maybe the British are intimidated by Lupica. Yes, that must be it! Why the All England brass just soil their britches at the sight of New Yorkers! He simply must be appeased! Lawn tennis will collapse if he is not placated! A credential and bowl of strawberries and cream at once for the man!

Priority is given to those journalists/radio reporters filing daily reports for the tournament. Applications should be supported by the Editor or Sports Editor in writing on headed notepaper of the publication or organisation concerned.

No unheaded letters will be considered. No application from freelancers or ghost writers will be accepted. We do not grant accreditation to journalists writing solely for the internet.

Why are you carrying Lupica's water, Frank? Just curious.

    Um, yes.
Again, Frank, all due respect because you seem to know a lot about the ins and outs of newspapers, but you really don't get how the DN works.

    From Bondy's diary/blog:
Speaking of royalty, Lupica showed up unannounced and within 10 minutes they gave him a pass and showered him with handshakes. I hate him.

I know Filip well enough to know he doesn't hate anybody. He used to make fun of me all the time in his diaries. But other posters here seem to understand the issue.

I'm not carrying anything for him. I just think there's no reason to drink whatever gets dumped in the trough here like some people do.

So there's no possibility what ginger and danews said is correct?

I know it pisses the hell out of people when someone differs from groupthink on this issue. But if I cared an iota about that, I wouldn't post a dissenting viewpoint in the first place because I know what the packlike response will be.

    You didn't answer my question.

I'm very skeptical. As I already said, Lupica is the only topic Danews posts on, so it's obvious Danews has an axe to grind.

Just a brief positive (I think) comment . . . one of you commented on Filip staying with friends to save the paper money; I can testify that as long ago as the World Cup in Italy (when the hell was that??? 1990???) He slept on the floor of my hotel room in Sardenia. Don't remember if it was to save money or just that he could not find a room but I've known him a bit for a long time and he is both a good guy and a good writer....

And I hope for your sake he doesn't snore!
Filip is indeed a hell of a guy. A ferry ride and dinner one night in Sydney remain among my travel highlights. I've never shared a room with him, though.
