The Washington Americans and they keep the same logo.

Would "The Skins" be an acceptable compromise? I'm guessing not.

The players don't care. I think the fans care a bit. The owner cares a lot.

But why should the name matter if names don't matter?
Once Charlotte got a basketball team, they should have jumped all over that, right? Why didn't they?
    Because the name mattered.

    Of course it doesn't.

They did when the Hornets were first created. By the Bobcats era, it was a combination of owner-hate hangover and the fact that the team sucked.

They could've been called the Charlotte Freeblowjobs and wouldn't have cracked the top 20 in attendance in 2004-05.

Which is why those relic baseball stadiums in Boston and Chicago have finally been replaced. What? They haven't?

Snyder ought to change the name and then make every fucking day "Retro Day."

"Hey, I changed the name. We're just not using it today. Probably won't tomorrow, either."

I would've gotten a Freeblowjob jersey. Number 69, of course.

The day the Yankees were forced to fold due to lack of attendance after moving from the old Yankee Stadium to the new one was the darkest day in sports history.

The name has been around since before I was born. Funny how no one made a shitstorm about it for decades. Not until a few years ago.

And, as has been pointed out but bears repeating, they're hardly the only team nickname based on a certain group of people.

The thing about this for Snyder, it's not a bad fight for him. This is the most popular he's been in DC since he owned the team. I imagine if/once local opinion on the team name changes, he'll change it.

    Redskins is to Braves/Indians/Warrior

    as

    Gooks to Asians

    It's a derogatory term.

People accepted slaughtering Native Americans 200 years ago. Why don't we still do that if it was OK then?

Two horrible arguments. Just because something has been around a long time does not mean it should be kept. Just because somebody else does something similar does not make it acceptable.

Then again, you aren't really one to care about ethnic and racial slurs, are you?

I'm kind of tickled we cling to a term ("Indians") that only came into being because Christopher Columbus didn't know where the fuck he was.

From an accuracy standpoint, "Redskins" > "Indians"
