A name created by Native Americans to distinguish themselves from the non-indigenous people that appeared in increasing numbers.

Look, if someone, be it a Redskin, Cowboy, Viking, Saint or even a Celtic wants a team to change its name for whatever reason, I have no problem with their right to make that request, or even organize a boycott or whatever.

I have a HUGE problem with a governmental agency attempting to force a private business into changing a name when the owner of said business has stated many times that he does not wish to change the name.

I'm way behind, but in a quick skim, it doesn't look like anyone posted this yet:

Former U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh said today he was “kicked off the air” from his radio show after discussing racial slurs, including using the n-word.

Management kept cutting off Walsh with commercials before taking him off the air “until further notice,” Walsh said in a telephone interview today.

He said that if he used the word Redskins and slurs against whites, he could stay on the air, but if he used slurs against blacks and Latinos, he could not.

Walsh had an evening drive-time talk show on AM 560 The Answer in the Chicago area and AM970 The Answer in New York.

Walsh said he was trying to discuss the U.S. Patent Office’s cancellation Wednesday of the Washington Redskins’ trademark; the Patent Office called the nickname “disparaging to Native Americans.”

“I said I found it hypocritical that we’re told that Redskins is every bit as racist as the n-word,” he said. “How come we get to say certain derogatory terms and not others?

“It’s a free speech issue,” he added. “When I say (a slur for blacks) that almost makes my stomach turn, and it should because it’s offensive. We sort of sanitize it by using “the n-word.”

Who cares if black people want the right to vote? They're only 12 percent of the population.

Point being: A poll that asks "are you offended" and damn near ALL respondents are people at whom the offending remark is not being directed is useless.

I'm actually a little interested in the polls of Native Americans, because quite frankly, their opinions matter a whole hell of a lot more than yours or mine. Obviously, someone is offended enough to fight it in court for several decades, with several rulings in their favor.

There's a big difference in denying a basic right, like the right to vote, and a team nickname that in and of itself is not meant to be offensive. If Snyder were smart he'd change the nickname because it's a fight he cannot win, but let's not pretend this is the same thing as denying someone's civil rights.

When did I say it was OK to use slurs against people? Instead of putting words in my mouth, perhaps you can look at the facts. 1.) I don't believe the Washington Redskins nickname is a slur. 2.) Neither do 79 percent of people recently polled by the Associated Press. 3.) I don't want them to be forced to change the nickname. 4.) Only 11 percent of people recently polled by the Associated Press do.
Are we really going to start making decisions based upon the will of 11 percent of the population? Really? Is that how things are going to go?
How about instead of getting riled up about a f*cking football team's nickname that those 11 percent of people go out and do something productive with their lives?
Because right now, if this were in front of a 10-person jury, Snyder's team would have almost 100 years of history behind him and polls that show most people support the name while you and your side's argument and evidence essentially boils down to "So, uh, we're like offended by it."
And, if that poll is to be believed, the deliberations of the jury would come down to eight people who supported the name, one person who wasn't sure or didn't care and one loudmouth in the corner who was offended and refused to listen to anyone else's point of view because "Errrmygod, its offensive."
But you'd like to go ahead and rule in favor of that one jury member then? Is that how you would settle issues?
