James McMurtry last night at a music hall in Birmingham. I didn’t enjoy the show as much as I thought, but that’s probably more of a me thing. Woke up from a nap with a pinched nerve and then had to stand for the whole show against one of those decorative metal railings that isn’t quite flush and so makes for uncomfortable loitering. Great picking, strong singing but the energy was just off. Still I can say I heard Choctaw Bingo live once in my life.

@dixiehack the “like” above was for the last sentence. Love McMurtry, but definitely have been to shows where the energy was off like you described. Definitely dulls the experience. Still, “Choctaw Bingo”.

Neat story about one of my favorite bands.
Cowboy Mouth, which has been around since the 90s and is famous for their live shows, was playing an annual show at a bowling alley/concert venue in New Orleans. It was a sellout, with about 700 people there, and was expected to be one of this small venue's biggest events of the year. An electrical fire on the power pole outside knocked out power to half the building between the end of the opening act and the time they were supposed to go on. It was going to take Entergy an hour or two to get there with the parts and the building would have to be evacuated while they worked.
Instead of canceling, the band grabbed an acoustic guitar and its drum set, plugged in to what was left of the PA system, and played an hourlong acoustic set in the time it took for Entergy to get there.
Good example of professionalism by a hard-working touring band to save the day.

I'm not much of a concert-goer, but I keep hoping a Jason Isbell show will be added in the nearby big city rather than suburban venues an hour's drive each way, but nothing yet.

Has anyone linked the story about sportswriters who love Jason Isbell? I discovered him through this site many years and several albums go, I think around when "Southeastern" came out.

Just realized it has been 21 years since I’ve been to Rock N Bowl (at the original location). Holy shit but I’m old.

There's a lot of that going around.

Isbell said during his concert in Cincinnati last weekend that his album was done for months, but they were waiting on vinyl to become available.

That means that they make a good amount of money off the vinyl sales, I’d imagine.

I watched a video of Isbell and it was a snooze. Every song sounded like the albumm.

Never knew of McMurtry until recently, when this song piggybacked onto an Apple Music playlist. Still the only song of his I've heard, but I love it, and he's on my list for more. I'll start with Choctaw Bingo, thanks.

Check out Lights of Cheyenne and Hurricane Party. The latter has one of the greatest lines ever “I don’t want another drink, I only want that last one again”
