Concerts thread: Best/Worst/Next/Last one you attended?

A week from today, Dave Hause in a small club in Charlotte. Counting the days...

 

After years of patiently waiting for the Experience Hendrix show to visit Toronto (if it was here before I must have missed it), it's coming here next March to Massey Hall, a historic venue in downtown Toronto, and I grabbed tickets through the artist presale.

Badass guitarists like Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Eric Johnson, Zakk Wylde, Kingfish Ingram and others (including Ally Venable, a terrific guitarist from Texas I saw on her first trip here a couple years ago) and guys like Chris Layton, the drummer with Stevie Ray Vaughn's Double Trouble.

As a guy who reveres Hendrix but obviously never got the chance to see him there's no way I could miss this

 

Saw it in Chicago in 2016. Pay whatever it costs. It’ll be worth it.

 

Thanks, tickets weren't cheap but there was no way I could pass it up given how rare a stop in Toronto is for this tour.

 

Voodoo Child (Slight Return) for the win.

 

Tyler Childers -- who I saw in a 200-cap venue in Brighton England just five years ago -- is now playing full-blown arenas for his 2025 tour. Crazy. Hold Steady opening for a couple of summer dates in Wisconsin. He's playing April 13 in Charlottesville at JPJ and two days later in Raleigh. Deer Tick -- who I've missed twice because of work commitments -- is the opener in Raleigh. Very tempted to catch that date.

 

Red House has always been my fave Hendrix song - it was always incredible live - followed by The Wind Cries Mary with Burning of the Midnight Lamp getting show money. The latter two might change tomorrow, or in 15 minutes.

 

Surf rock came to my Central Washington burg last night, as Canadian girl group The Surfragettes played a great show at a cozy local venue. They play instrumental surf rock in retro outfits, and are legit musicians -- especially the drummer, Annie Lillis! She pounds those drums like the second coming of Bun E. Carlos ... minus the glasses and the cigarettes.

They are touring through the western U.S. in the next few weeks ... highly recommended.

 

That's cool, not familiar with these fellow Canuckistanis. They sound like they could be cousins to another Canuckistani band that had a real surf vibe, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, best known for "Having an Average Weekend", the theme song for Kids In The Hall.

 

Here's a YouTube video of one of their new songs, which they played last night. Most of the set was originals, but they also mixed in some covers. Besides obvious choices like the Ventures, they also threw in a Spice Girls cover (!) and Blondie's "Heart of Glass," both in surf-rock instrumental style. The latter had the audience singing along.

For any fellow college rock fans who might remember this group, the Surfrajettes music reminds me of 1990s sci-fi surf rock outfit Man or Astro-Man?

 

Great stuff, terrific name too. I had no idea they were from Toronto and played an album release party at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto a couple weeks ago

 

I can't believe I found footage from that show in Brighton... holy crap, what great memories.
