Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the Capital Theatre

I've seen Neil Young probably six times but I had amazing seats for the Labor Day weekend performance in this great venue ... until the show was canceled yesterday. Crazy Horse guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro broke his hand.

And, oh, Patti Smith was joining them.

Mrs. Huggy and I are taking Huggy Jr. to Darien Lake tomorrow to see the Allman Brothers and Steve Winwood. Will be the kid's first concert, the missus and I saw the Allmans at the Beacon Theater in New York in March. Looking forward to seeing my man Derek Trucks again and getting Winwood as an opener is a real bonus too, have loved the guy's music for years, never had the chance to see him.

Replacements reunion show in Toronto. They sound great!

Well, if they sounded great, that would be a big step up from how they often sounded in concert in their drunk-ass heyday.

Background: I was a big Replacements fan back in the day. My college roommate turned me on to the 'Mats after "Let It Be" came out. There are damn few bands who can match the 1-2-3 punch of "Let it Be," "Tim" and "Pleased to Meet Me." Westerberg is a brilliant songwriter.

That said, the Replacements were a dumpster fire as a live act, and somehow that's been turned into something cute and clever in their legend. It wasn't. It was fucking aggravating. I saw them in 1985. They opened with the Battle Hymn of the Republic. About halfway through the show it devolved into nothing but drunken covers of songs they didn't really know. That may sound amusing, but the joke wears out really quickly when all they're playing is stuff like the first half of "Taking Care of Business."

So, I'm not too amped about the "return" of the Replacements... particularly since it's only Paul and Tommy, and they've been playing together since the band broke up anyway. Bob's dead, Slim's incapacitated by a stroke, and Chris won't speak to the other guys. Hard to call it a reunion when it's two of the five guys who've been in the band.

I broke out "Let it Be" a couple of nights ago. It still sounds great. I'll stick with that version of the 'Mats.

How does this work? Honestly, I don't understand. Is the band putting this out?

A bootleg recording of the Replacements’ reunion set Sunday in Toronto has been making the rounds online pretty much since first thing Monday morning, originating from the fan-driven Replacements Live Archive Project, then the blog SlicingUpEyeballs. The proliferation has gotten so widespread, even Rolling Stone posted the entire 75-minute performance online today.

We figure if the band isn’t going to get litigious with media mogul Jann Wenner over that one, then surely they won’t sue their independently owned hometown newspaper for posting at least a few of the tracks, right? (If it were Prince, we’d think otherwise.)

Just got tickets to see Cheap Trick at the Arizona State Fair. Second time I've seen them in a few months. Can't wait.

I guessed that was going to be the link and I wasn't disappointed.

They have an audio montage they play right before they take the stage and that's a prominent part of it.
