No to John Barleycorn at Caesars. It was almost like he was trying to get out of the way for Steely Dan. Played for an hour and only some of his hits and a few songs I've never heard. His band was very solid and reminds one that musicians like Winwood, due to his place in rock history, always attract quality sidemen/band mates.
Speaking of Allman Bros., saw Canadian rockers The Sheepdogs (great band, BTW) recently and for their second encore they did a killer cover of "Whipping Post" complete with near note for note solo, just slightly abridged.

Josh Groban with Mrs. Novelist last weekend. Sarah McLachlan opened. Good lord was her set depressing. Enjoyed Groban, though.

I think the last rock concert I went to was Styx on the Kilroy Was Here tour. Enjoyed it, but really, I've just never been big on concerts. Kinda prefer the studio sound.

I want to imagine Sarah McLachlan came out for her set with a mangy, beaten puppy in a cage and threatened to kill it if you didn't visit the merch table.

Mrs. Novelist said the same thing. McLachlan even admitted that she writes and performs a lot of downer songs.

Pearl Jam at Wrigley Field. The last rock band that will ever be able to sell out stadiums, and Eddie is 51, so I'm pretty melancholy about it, as great as they were. Rock 'n' roll will basically die with us.

And maybe it needs to retreat to sweaty blues clubs and basements. Maybe it was never supposed to fill stadiums and push merchandise. But the collective experience of America's youth kind of rallying around a huge rock band, then following that rock band into adulthood, growing old with them, is a really amazing experience that subsequent generations are going to miss out on. Plus, the fucking music is grand, too. No one will ever come along and write "Alive," "Porch," "Elderly Woman," "Corduroy," "Hail Hail," "I Got Id," "Yellow Ledbetter" and on and on all out of the same pen and guitars.

I saw The Hip's first show in Toronto two weeks ago and it was great but even through the TV the Kingston show on Saturday was incredible. If that is indeed the end it was a hell of a way to go out, I may never again see Canadians get together in those numbers everywhere - houses, cottages, docks, boats, bars, street parties etc. - for something that doesn't involve a puck

Have tickets on order for Bob Weir at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Oct. 19. He's got a new record coming out next month that is supposed to be mostly the kind of cowboy songs he used to do with the Grateful Dead. The wife is especially pumped. She's long said jokingly (I think) that Bob is the only man she'd ever leave me for.
