My uncle is a guitar maker who has made guitars for David Crosby and Jackson Brown, among others. Crosby has done interviews where he talks about how much he loves the guitars. When I was younger, my parents and uncle were talking about David Crosby for probably 25 or 30 minutes when one of them finally looks over at me and said "You know who Crosby is, right?." I said, "Sure, I know who Bing Crosby is." I was nearly disowned that day.

 

Great-grandfather related to Margaret Mitchell of "Gone With the Wind" fame. He sent me a letter about 20 years ago explaining the links and some of the background when "Scarlett" was written and does refer to the family name. But of course I lost it, dammit ... and he passed away a few years ago.

 

My dad has told me a few stories about his dad, who I never got the chance to meet because he died before I was born.

One of my dad's favorite stories to tell was of my grandpa being a bootlegger who got involved with some mafia-type folks when he was younger. My dad told me my grandpa got caught by the cops, but gave them so much insider info that they cut him a deal to avoid prison time.

He's told me that story I don't even know how many times. I want to learn more about my dad's parents, but I know it's an emotional subject for him because of everything that happened.

I had a relative who didn't drink beer often, but when he did, he always made it Dos Equis

 

The sport has never been that big, but my grandpa won three or four national championships in boat racing in the 40s and 50s. Some of the trophies are still in my brother's basement.

 

During WWII my mom was a child in Utrecht, Holland. Her father was bedridden with arthritis as well as cancer and Oma (her mom) took care of everyone. She nursed her husband, raised three small children and when the Nazis occupied and took most of the food she would ride into the countryside on her bicycle for miles picking up stray potatoes in the fields. This makes her a hero.

Her neighbour woman was friendly with the Nazis (and was suspected of collaborating with them and informing on her neighbours). The day the Canadians marched into Utrecht, Oma went over and knocked on the woman's door. When she opened it, Oma flattened her with one punch. This makes her cool.
