How in the holy hell did they walk five straight Royals?!? Were the pitches that bad, or was KC showing some actual plate discipline? Inquiring minds want to know.

Witasick is a loooooooooser. Guy asks out of Oakland b/c he's tired of pitching in mop-up duty and promptly proves mop-up duty is too much to ask out of him.

Erik Bedard with the best non-no-hitter pitching performance of the year, and maybe it could be argued he threw better than some of the no-nos. Went the distance facing the minimum 27. The two hits he gave up were promptly erased on double plays and he struck out 15. Who says a lineup of 1B/DH types and utility players can't win ballgames?

I've been away. Zimbabwe asked me:

"JJ -- Would the M's move Jones for a legit starter? Should they?"

I don't believe the M's will move Jones, especially while Ichiro's status is up in the air. For Buehrle, they might give up Wladimir Balantine (actually much better OPS in Tacoma than Jones), Jeff Clement, and throw in Julio Mateo for good measure. But only if they could extend his contract, and I don't think Buerhle has his heart set on Seattle. Balantine and Mateo for three months of Buehrle is a deal I would do, but I don't know what Bavasi thinks of Balantine. His stock wasn't particularly high this spring; too many strikeouts and so-so in the outfield, but he has shown lots of AAA improvement this year. Will it ever translate to the majors...?

And, from my perspective, Jones is the one prospect they shouldn't trade. Unless circumstances are extraordinary, such as Jones (and whatever) for Buehrle on a four-year extension. Which is pie in the sky.

I can cross off Petco Park among my many baseball venues now. Saw Padres-Marlins game on July 4, a 1-0 Padres win. I joked with a friend of mine that instead of seeing fireworks, I saw a Padres game.

Padres' bat temporarily came alive it looks like today with eight runs against the Braves. If Padres make a deal (I know Milton Bradley debuted today) before the deadline, who should they get to give the offense a boost?

Mets beat the Astros, 5-3, in 17 innings.

Tom Seaver got the win for the Mets, who will start Jerry Koosman tomorrow.

Did Game 6 of the '86 NLCS go 16 or 17 innings between the Mets and Astros?

Damn that was a great game ... in the greatest postseason ever.

Long day for the northeast-based teams (i.e. the only ones that matter): Red Sox and Yankees each lose in 13, the aforementioned Mutts win in 17.

16 innings. After that game, the Mets flew back to NY and destroyed the plane in the wildest celebration ever. Frank Cashen, then the Mets GM, screamed at Davey Johnson, giving the Mets manager a bill for the damages. Johnson went to the team, told them what Cashen said, then ripped the bill up and said, "They can go fuck themselves."

Doc Gooden then snorted a Pacino-in-Scarface gagger while Lenny Dykstra rear-ended Davey's daughter with a half-pouch of Redman in his cheek.

    Ahh, those were the days...

    Adam Dunn.

They have the pieces to make it happen, too.
