Corriendo beisbol estring numero seis (because 46 pages on No. 5 was enough ...)

I'm not saying it is likely, but it isn't impossible, plus their rotation continues to get shakier past Beckett (never thought I'd type that, Hi BYH) and Dice-K.

If you have a juggernaut offense, do you really need a pitching staff? I mean the answer is yes, but you can get away without a great staff at least until the playoffs.

The Red Sox have a juggernaut offense? Last I checked Ortiz had just 14 homers, Manny is having his worst season in recent memory, Julio Lugo might as well not bat and Coco Crisp is garbage. If it weren't for Mike Lowell and Youkilis, the Red Sox would really be struggling. But now that Lowell has remembered it is the second half, I am waiting for his swoon to begin.

On paper yes, they have the opportunity with the Yankees and several other teams to have the best offense in the majors. Right now, they are 8th in the league.

And even if the offense continues to stumble, the Sox a.) have Beckett and Matsuzaka and b.) a double-digit lead. After half a season, do you really believe the Yankees or Jays have the ability to play lights-out for long enough to catch the Sox?

The Sox are not losing the East. And if they get a formidable no. 3 starter in time for October, they could still win the whole damn thing.

Shit, the Yankees offense isn't even that good and I haven't tried to perpetuate that recently. It is so damn streaky.
I just wanted to point out that just because the Red Sox offense has been mighty in the past doesn't mean it is mighty now.

  7. Hasn't Dice-K been pitching well lately? I'm ashamed to admit I don't really follow the Yanks or Sox that much.

EDIT: Damnit, didn't see Dice-K at the end of Gola!'s earlier post.

Yankees are 4th best in the league, even with their streaks.

Besides against the Tigers, he hasn't been bad.

Don't the Yankees have a better chance of adding a hitter than the Red Sox do of adding a formidable No. 3 starter?

What Mayfly said. Dice-K was lights out in June and early July before getting roughed up by the Tigers, who I think are easily the best team in baseball.

A-Rod has more home runs (30-25) and nearly as many RBI (97-86) as Papi and Manny combined this season. Add in Lugo's sub-Mendoza Line bat, Drew's .250 average with no power behind it, Pedroia's high average with no speed or runs, and the Red Sox offense is far from being all that great.

That said, Beckett, Dice-K and a few good performances sprinkled here and there from Wakefield, Taveraz and Schilling (when healthy) -- not to mention that great bullpen -- ought to be enough for the Red Sox to win the ALeast easily.
