I know next to nothing about flying, but if he had fuel problems I wonder how much experience came into play if at all.

    Mannnn ... my thoughts exactly.

If the importance of labor unions even approach the importance of life or death in your little world, I feel sorry for you.

In the summer of 1979 I went to Nantasket Beach with my great uncle. On the way there he told me that the last time he went to Nantasket Beach was the day Babe Ruth died. When we got home later that afternoon, we turned on the evening news and heard Thurman Munson died.

ESPNews is airing a piece about Munson now.

I was five years old when that happened and I remember being sad and confused. It was the first time I'd ever heard of an athlete dying. A few nights later, my dad and I were watching the Yankees-Orioles game and there was a shot of an Orioles player crying.

"Why is he crying?" I asked. Dad said it was because he was sad because Munson died. At five, that really threw me.

  5. FDP,

The experience factor still comes into play, as far as how quickly you can react to the problem.

Do you immediately know what to do, what checklists and procedures to complete, or do you panic?

Especially if he is in a plane that is relatively unfamiliar to him, the gap in experience could play a critical role in how you respond.

Put it like this. Would you prefer a writer who has written a couple stories for his college paper or someone who has done the job for a couple years at a local paper.

To equate it with handling an emergency, which would you prefer on a tight deadline?

If the reports that the plane was at 1,100 feet or so are accurate, I'm not sure a parachute would have done its job. That's not every high, given the weight of a plane.

And a talking head on Olbermann's show just suggested that in this particular instance, the instructor was more than likely manning the controls.

Apparently, Lidle's father found out watching television. And, there's a good chance Lidle's wife still hasn't received the news.

Compton said Lidle's wife, Melanie, and their 6-year-old son Christopher had left New York for Los Angeles before the accident, and likely had no way of learning of the news. According to Compton, a priest planned to meet the flight at Los Angeles International Airport and break the news to Melanie Lidle that her life is forever changed.

He found Lidle's parents struggling to accept the loss of their son, a young man who loved flying his new airplane and playing poker.

Who wrote that, Wright Thompson or Arthur Rhodes?

Man, reading this thread, especially a couple of pages back, there's some SportsJournalists.commers who are really covering themselves in glory.

What advanced level of patheticism have some of you reached making light of something like this? Can't you save that shit for a day?

RIP to all of those who died. No matter the circumstances, it is tragic.
