God I'm so disappointed in my Canadian friends.

How there is not a heated debate over whether Rico Carty or Otto Velez was a better DH is the worst thing to happen to Toronto discourse since I there for a visit in '90 and some stoner told me I was personally responsible for the break-up of Canada back when the Quebecois were hotting up.

May you all be damned to read Ernie Whitt's biography.

The reason there is no debate is because there is no debate - no one beats Otto the Swatto. Still remember when he cranked four homers in a doubleheader against the Tribe.

And speaking of unsung sluggers, whatever happened to Roy Howell? He still holds the team record for RBIs in one game, driving in nine runs one night in Yankee My Wankee Stadium. It was September 1977 - two homers, two doubles and a single, and the Jays won 19-3 over the soon-to-be world champs.

Is Jim Clancy too revered to be mentioned in this thread? Seemed like he was the only Jay worth a shit from 1977-83.

Don't forget Willie Upshaw. Also an original Jay, and the first to drive in 100 runs in a season.

There were a lot of guys on that original team who really should've turned out better. I'm thinking of someone like Jerry Garvin in particular - as a rookie, he went 5-0 out of the blocks and was 7-3 on June 5. He finished the year 10-18 and only won 10 more games the rest of his career. WTF?

Garvin picked off a load of guys early in his career too until everyone got wise to his move.

I always had high hopes for Jeff Byrd.

I've not been to the Ex, but it's always fun when the Jays come to Tiger Stadium with a wave of folks from Windsor.

I hate to nitpick but you strike me as someone who appreciates historical accuracy. Upshaw wasn't an original Jay. He was a Rule 5 pickup from the Yanks in 1978.

    Sirs, Madames,

When they fix up the EX they'll have a showcase that's good for 50 years. Nothing like catching a game with the breeze blowing off the lake and then making it to the Midway.

You're right. It just seemed like he'd been around since Day 1.

And I do very much appreciate historical accuracy, btw. Please feel free to nitpick. :)
