Yeah, one of my son's classmates, proud he got his first driver's license, posted a picture of it on Facebook with everything visible -- name, birthdate, license number. When my son showed it to me, I gave him a firm, "Don't do that."

For fear of upsetting a fragile poster, I won't name him, but we've seen how young people respond when someone they think they are close to dies. They might become more emotional, more attached, imagine more of a life together.

I'm open minded about this, but I think he may have decided after she "died" that she was the love of his life.

    He was lying.

She was never the love of his life.

He was in on the BS.

    Everything adds up to zero.

    This is not difficult.

Otherwise, he's a complete moron who can't even visit a friend when she's in the hospital.

I wonder if *this* guy's phone is ringing for the first time in years today with a reporter calling about a hoax:

I do love the opponent in this picture.

At what point was he lying? The whole time?

I don't know. People want to believe. And, they're embarrassed to say they've never met their "girlfriend" in real life.

And, I don't see what he gets out of this. It was going on for three years. Yes, that makes him dumb, but I'm not sure it makes him complicit.

If we are to believe Te'o milked this to get sympathy for his Heisman candidacy, then the only conclusion is that voters must think that going to school in College Station, Texas, is more of a hardship than losing your girlfriend.

Forde reporting that Te'o had agreed to come clean this past Monday, but that he and his agents decided against it:

I think if you give Te'o every benefit of the doubt, he still lied his ass off...

Anyone know a story like this from their real life?

I do. Pre-Internet days, a couple of my college buddies (this was just after college) each received phone calls from a girl, who claimed she knew them from college. She was in a class with them, or something. The kind of thing where she may have known them, but they didn't remember her.

None of them knew the others were getting these calls.

One buddy was sure his girlfriend was behind it, trying to test him.

Another is highly suspected of having phone sex with her.

Eventually they learn that several of them are getting the same kinds of phone calls.

A suspect is identified: the male roommate of one of our college buddies (who has not been receiving phone calls).

I'm forgetting some of the details, but a sting is employed where our friend will pick up the phone when his roommate is on the phone with one of our other friends while "in character".

Roommate is busted. Lots of people are embarrassed. Funny story is still funny.

He got the phone numbers from a list on the refrigerator. (My name & number were not on the list.)

The guy was model good looking, and always had a gorgeous girlfriend. But, he convinced several guys he was a hot chick.
