Doesn't the Lance Armstrong story make that point much more powerfully?

maybe the most important part of this story is that NBC is the biggest media fraud since Clifford Irving. The Network that covers ND football to a greater extent than any other is shown to conclusively be the de facto athletic department media relations division. They cover ND for 4 hours of live coverage almost Evey week for 5 months and not a single resource devoted to fact checking this hoax

A lesson is real damn hard to find in all of this.
    Don't hurt yourself straining.
The likelihood is that all of this means ... absolutely nothing.
Which is why it's fitting our idiocracy is breathlessly discussing it instead of what happened yesterday in Washington.
We deserve everything we get as a people.

The performance of NBC, with its relationship to Notre Dame, troubles me not in the least bit in this situation. Sports Illustrated does. ESPN does. The South Bend Tribune does.

Te'o is another data point. And it's quite a different tale of myth-making than the common PED one. It shows that we didn't learn our lesson about myth-making at all from Armstrong and baseball. We still leave our skepticism at the door.

Sports journalists, especially, want good stories more than they want truth. Look at how many people are dying for this to be a beard story. Because, I admit, that would make it a more awesome story.

    I agree.

Do you think it's more true of sports journalists than news journalists, generally? I think it probably is.

It naturally has to be. News reporters' facts are important. Our facts are box scores.

When all the layers are peeled off I think we are going to find that JDV is behind the whole hoax.

Do you honestly think NBC gives a shit about Notre Dame the other 7 months?
