Even if the idea of Fa'afafine has nothing to do with all this, it is fascinating. I had no idea anything like that existed in any culture. My interest is piqued.

This is fucking great. Taken from a buddy of mine on Facebook:

Here's one reason why minor-league baseball teams are so awesome: On May 23, the Florence Freedom are hosting a Manti Te'o Girlfriend Bobblehead Night. Yes, the team says, the box with the bobblehead will be empty. Also, one section of the ballpark will be reserved for patrons to attend with their imaginary friends, girlfriends, boyfriends or spouses. There will be an air guitar contest, a make pretend kiss cam and an imaginary food fight. And it's $1 beer night. I'm in!

I have heard of similar notions of gender in Native American culture.

The average age of an NFL player: 27.

Most guys in an NFL locker room couldn't care less about where he sticks it.

I can understand why Te'o decided to wait to tell ND this was a hoax (and kind of, why ESPN decided to sit on it).

Look at the shitstorm it's causing right now. Multiply that shitstorm by orders of magnitude if this breaks just days before the NCG.

Perhaps it shouldn't be such a shitstorm.

So, they've kept it up for years? And, he's never determined who was behind it?

    That's crazy.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Most athletes are among the most masculine/homophobic creatures on the planet. Maybe a lot of folks would embrace him, but I would say the majority would not. That is why you have never seen a pro athlete come out while still playing, and I would bet it will be a long time before it happens.

The culture surely reinforces the stereotype.

But the relative youth of the NFL would make it the safest place, if a guy wanted to come out.
