Deadspin: Manti Te'o's dead girlfriend story was a hoax

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by Small Town Guy, Jan 16, 2013.

  1. Did he happen to bring any cell phone bills with him?

Well, she reportedly gave the photos to her HS friend, Tuiasasopo. I feel bad for her if she isn't involved beyond that, because she spoke to Deadspin, who agreed to identify her as Reba. Then other news outlets tracked her down. Oops!

He told Schaap he wasn't in on it.

What's the point of not allowing cameras? To keep people from seeing his body language?

That was my first thought, and it doesn't help his cause.

  7. He said he wasn't involved. Shouldn't we take his word?

He still needs to explain why he continued to make references to his dead girlfriend and her illness at the Heisman ceremony and at BCS championship media day. Those both occurred AFTER he "realized" he'd been duped.

(I imagine his explanation was/will be "I played along so it wouldn't be a distraction," but if so, he needs to say that).

A new piece of evidence in the idea he was the mastermind behind it or knew all along:
    * He did an off-camera interview (because people would have been so much less cynical if he'd just gone on Oprah).

That's added to the other pieces of evidence showing he was the mastermind or knew all along:
    * An anonymous person was "80 percent sure" he was.
    * Well, I mean, he had to be. It just makes sense!

That mountain of evidence is against, well, pretty much everything else that's come out the past two days that indicates he was duped while he was also lying/exaggerating to friends and family about an online relationship. But, you know, body language! If we could just see it we could tell if he was lying -- the same way body-language experts were famously the first to know Brad and Jen were going to split -- but now that we can't, we know he's hiding something.

I don't see the difference between his masterminding the creation of the fake girl and him realizing she was fake early on and continuing to use the fake to further his own goals.

I don't know if it hurts his cause either.

I just think it's strange. But, hey, everything about this has been strange so why not his interview too?

If someone can conclude the Newton school shooting was a hoax because a parent laughed prior to a press conference then I think its reasonable to say some people might focus more on his body language than his words.
