I think that most of the details came from interviews with Te'o himself.

Have to admit this thought popped in my head, as well. Why the hell would the football star at Notre Dame need a distant cyber girlfriend? Don't guys like that have real tangible touchable doable girls falling all over them? Strikes me as something one might do to provide a ready answer to the "why doesn't have a girlfriend" questions.

And that fills my bald speculation quota for the day.
