In my best Harry Belafonte voice...

    Te'o! Te'o!
Daylight come, now it's time to confess
    Internet girlfriend created a mess
Felled by leukemia, what a sad twist
But how can she die when she doesn't exist?
    Te'o! Te'o!
How can she die when she doesn't exist?

Yeesh. Sounds like ESPN actually tried to do the right thing, but they won't make that mistake again.

“If I had my druthers, we would have run with it,” one executive said. “We’ve had a bunch of discussions internally since then, and I don’t think it will happen this way again. I wonder sometimes if perfection is the enemy of the practical.”

The right thing is to wait for a useless quote, apparently.

Once you have documents, it's over. Te'o saying "No comment" or "Wow! I was duped!" doesn't add a thing.

I have a hard time criticizing ESPN for wanting to get the story right.

"For them, it was a question of journalistic standards. They did not want to be wrong."

“We were very close,” said Vince Doria, ESPN’s chief for news. “We wanted to be very careful.”

But if they were just waiting to see if the school or Teo would confirm or deny, then they definitely fucked up.

Probably still smarting from their ill fated Bernie Fine story and took a more cautious approach this time around,

Surprised at this part of story:

"who had initially been put onto the story by Tom Condon, Te’o’s agent "
